In the face of venture capitalists pulling out of the field of business networking, such networking-sites grow steadily. LinkedIn has more then 4 Mio. users at the moment, OpenBC lately made a jump to 1 Mio. users. Ungeachtet der Tatsache, daß Venture Capitalists langsam weniger in den Bereich des Business Networkings investieren, wachsen solche Online-Netzwerke weiter an. LinkedIn liegt bei über 4 Mio. Teilnehmern, OpenBC gelang kürzlich der Sprung über die ein Millionen-Grenze. Zum Thema "Strength of Internet Ties" habe ich kürzlich eine Studie des PEW/Internet Life Project gelesen -- angesichts dieser Studie frage ich mich, wie sinnvoll das internationale Netzwerkeln ist...

Amongst others those results are: The internet plays a socially beneficial role in a world moving towards “networked individualism," while at the same time it helps us maintaining our dispersed social networks. Especially email is a vital tool to manage large groups and networks, but phoning and face-to-face contact were not ousted by emails and IMs (as usual those new technologies were just added to the array of media.) It's more like the other way around:

My sticking point: according to the study, the amount of emails (and I guess IMing) you got with your contacts correlates with the amount of phone- and face-to-face-contact.

"People who email the vast majority (80%–100%) of their core ties weekly are in phone contact with 25% more of their core ties than non-emailers. Moreover, those who email the vast majority of their significant ties weekly are in phone contact with twice as many of their significant ties than non-emailers."

I draw the conclusion that networks that only exist online without contacts ever meeting each other, don't seem to be quite stable. A stumbling block on the way of international networking websites? To me this makes perfect sense: Business-ties which only live online would be exceptional to me--with one of those exceptions being my online-friend Amy in Hong Kong, together with whom I'm thinking about doing a web-business.

In my opinion, huge networks like LinkedIn and OpenBC will eventually be outlived by smaller, more relevant, local networking groups. How do you think about this? What are your typical communication-habits?

Die Ergebnisse der im Januar erschienenen Studie: das Internet verändert unser soziales Zusammensein in eine Form von "vernetzer Individualität" und hilft gleichzeitig dabei, unsere verstreuten Kontakte zusammenzuhalten. Besonders Emails helfen dabei, größere Netzwerke zu pflegen. Frühere Befürchtungen, Emails und IMs würden das Telefonieren und persönlichen Kontakt verdrängen, haben sich nicht bewahrheitet (wie üblich kommen neue Technologien einfach zum Medienmix hinzu). Eher das Gegenteil ist der Fall.

Hier liegt für mich allerdings auch der Knackpunkt: der Studie nach nimmt der Prozentsatz des Mailens (und vermutlich auch des Instant Messagings) in dem Maße zu, in dem man seine Gegenüber auch persönlich trifft oder mit diesen telefoniert.

Dies scheint den Schluß zuzulassen, daß Netzwerke, die im Internet entstehen, aber nicht durch persönliche Treffen bekräftigt werden können, nicht sonderlich stabil sind. Ein Stolperstein besonders für international ausgerichtete Karrierenetzwerke? Für mich machen die Ergebnisse jedenfalls Sinn: eine Geschäftsbeziehung die nur aus Internetkontakten besteht, könnte ich mir nur in Ausnahmefällen vorstellen -- ein solcher Ausnahmefall ist z.B. meine Internet-Bekanntschaft Amy in Hong Kong, mit der ich zur Zeit über ein gemeinsames Geschäft nachdenke.

Meiner Meinung nach werden sich Netzwerke wie LinkedIn und OpenBC in den nächsten Jahren überleben, zu Gunsten von kleineren, relevanteren, lokaleren Netzwerk-Gemeinschaften. Wie denkt ihr darüber -- und welche Kommunikationsgewohnheiten könnt ihr so bei Euch selbst beobachten?
