Throughout the last year I found the idea of social annotations quite appealing and useful. Imagine the following: you want to highlight a section of a website for yourself or somebody else, and possible leave a remark about what you wanted to point out. This is the general idea of social annotation: associate a post-it-like remark with a website and share it with others.

Soziale Notizen
Während des letzten Jahres fand ich die Idee sozialer Notizen sehr nützlich und interessant. Man möchte beispielsweise einen Ausschnitt einer Website für sich selbst oder andere markieren und eventuell einen Kommentar als Erinnerungsstütze einstellen. Das ist die Idee sozialer Notizen: eine post-it-artige Bemerkung wird mit einer Website verbunden, um sie mit anderen zu teilen.

Social annotation is not a new idea. "Web sticky notes" were introduced by ThirdVoice (I think their site does not exist any longer) in May 1999. Their idea was to enable users to highlight textsnippets of a website and display comments about this item, either private or public. As you maybe remember, the web was a different place some 6 years ago. So ThirdVoice were seemingly facing technological challenge--which made them choose to implement their sticky notes as a plug-in for Internet Explorer 4. Hence it was a very constricted technology and it didn't really fly. Eventually ThridVoice had to close down.

With the advent of Web 2.0, the internet has changed. Nowadays everybody is blogging, commenting and sharing with each other. No wonder that idea of social annotation reappeared on the stage. Surely, there are a lot of legal and ethical issues connected to this topic (e.g. would you like somebody else to leave a sticky with advertisements on your website? Ot hthink about digital graffiti)--still, I found the idea compelling to have rants about a website somehow attached to the website itself. I was even considering, writing an annotation-webservice myself. The idea went into and out of the drawer for several times during the last year.
I finally gave up on it. Many other startups and big players like Google already jumped on the bandwaggon. Again by choosing a plug-in-technology. I'm wondering: was there a real change of mind about this--or will those annotation-plug-ins fail again? Firefox extensions became quite popular lately after all. From a technological point of view, a none-plug-in implementation would not be a big deal--but maybe the Zeitgeist is heading into another direction. Myself, I put my idea back into the drawer. And I'm very curious how this topic is going to evolve.

Soziale Notizen sind keine neue Idee. "Web Haftnotizen" wurden im Mai 1999 von ThirdVoice angekündigt (deren Website nicht mehr existiert, wie ich glaube). Ihre Idee sollte es Usern ermöglichen, Absätze einer Site zu markieren und Kommentare darüber zu schreiben, entweder privat oder öffentlich. wie ihr euch vielleicht erinnert, sah das Internet vor 6 Jahren noch ein wenig anders aus. ThirdVoice sahn sich offensichtlich mit einer Menge technischer Hürden konfrontiert -- sie realisierten Ihre Haftnotizen letztendlich als Plugin für den Internet Explorer 4. die Technologie war dementsprechend sehr eingeschränkt und nicht wirklich erfolgreich. ThirdVoice verschwanden später von der Bildfläche.

Mit dem Aufkommen des Web 2.0 hat sich das Internet verändert. Heutztage gibt es überall Austausch durch Blogs, Kommentare und Bilder. Kein Wunder, daß da das Thema der sozialen Notizen wieder aufgegriffen wird. Zugegeben, es gibt eine Menge rechtlicher und ethische Bedenken, die man haben könnte (denkt nur mal an fremde Werbestickies auf eurer Website oder digitales Graffiti) -- trotzdem finde ich die Idee sehr nützlich, Diskussionen über eine Website direkt mit dieser zu verbinden. Ich habe sogar daran gedacht, selber so einen Webservice aufzusetzen. Die Idee wanderte im letzten Jahr diverse Male aus und in meine Schublade.
Letztlich habe ich es aufgegeben. Viele Startups und große Unternehmen wie Google haben sich mittlerweile des Themas angenommen. Wiederum mit dem Einsatz von Plugins. Ich frage mich, ob wirklich ein Sinneswandel eingesetzt hat, oder ob diese Plugin-Ansätze auch wieder zum Scheitern verurteilt sind. Immerhin ist das Browsen mit Firefox-Plugins mittlerweile sehr verbreitet. Technisch wäre mit den heutigen Technologien im Netz auch mühelos eine Nicht-Plugin-Variante denkbar -- aber vielleicht geht der Zeitgeist einfach in eine andere Richtung. Ich habe meine Idee jedenfalls wieder zurück in die Schublade gelegt. Und bin sehr gespannt, wie sich dieses Thema weiterentwickeln wird.
