Leap ahead (into the living-room)

Since Apple announced their switch to Intel-processors, rumours went flying. Intel and Apple would have a strategy to ungroup Intel from Microsoft and create more competition on the PC-market. But will Steve Jobs and Craig Barrett pull more out of the hat? The newest press releases from Intel necessitate further gossip.

Intel seems to turn itself inside out at the moment. Golem has it, that Intel inside will now be "Intel leap ahead", also processor-labelling will be changed. On top, Intel's vice-president showcased their new "living-room-computer" at the end of last year: "Viiv" is a fast-booting home-entertainment-system (which is (still) relying on software form Redmond).

Businesweek analysises, if Intel will catch up with AMD this year. To me, this is not really the question. Would high-performance e.g. been critical to Apple, then maybe they would have switched to AMD in the first place. Allegedly, OSX would have performed better on AMD-chipsets anyway.
The next computer-evolution will IMHO be about bandwith, not faster processors. Intel, Apple and Microsoft will be after integrating computer and lifestyle (and here ultra-edge CPUs will really not be of any importance). The battle for the living-rooms has already begun: Microsoft got their Media Centre and XBOX 360 (if the thing didn't crash again due to overheating), and both seem to be well integrated, according to german Agenturblog. But for sure there also a lot of negative opinions about it.
Given this, Intel's Viiv and Apple's Front Row seem to indicate what will happen this year. Apple will surely enforce the switch for smaller computermodels, ripe for the living-room, rather than for their big powerbooks.

I find this quite interesting, cause interface-design for settop-boxes and media-centres always quite attracted me. Who do you think about these issues? Anybody got comments about "living-room computers"?

PS: Paul Murphy predicted on ZDnet, that Intel's delays will protract Apple's switching process.
