All is not well with Lion

Adobe has posted a long list of known issues with Adobe products on Mac OS 10.7. Basically, all of their products are affected in some way -- including dependencies on Java and Apple's weird decision to not have JRE automatically pre-installed any more. The full list is here.

Personally, I will only switch to Lion for the sake of XCode and App-development, and I'm pretty glad that I am currently in no rush to do so and can sit out some of the problems.

Adobe hat eine lange Liste mit Problemen von Adobe Produkten auf Mac OS 10.7 veröffentlicht. Betroffen ist mehr oder weniger jedes ihrer Produkte -- z.B. auch wegen Java-Dependencies und Apples etwas seltsamer Entscheidung, JRE nicht mehr automatisch vorzuinstallieren. Die Liste ist hier einzusehen.

Ich werde persönlich nur wegen Xcode und der Entwicklung von Apps auf Lion umsteigen müssen und bin ziemlich froh, daß ich damit im Moment nicht sonderlich in Eile bin und die Probleme aussitzen kann.

Yahoo closes sale of Delicious?

According to Business Insider, "Yahoo is about to close a deal to sell bookmarking site Delicious for $1-$2 million". It had bought Delicious in December 2005 for an alleged US$15 million - US$30 million (Wikipedia), a loss of 95% of Delicious evaluation.

Personally, I have switched to Google Bookmarks a few weeks ago, after using Delicious for roughly 6 years. The site always lacked quite a few critical features I would have wished for. But after the take-over by Yahoo, Delicious became even less relevant: certain interesting metrics disappeared along a wider suggestion of tags in the popular pages. Lately, the popular pages suffered from spam and large amounts of down-time.

Business Insider zufolge wird Yahoo in Kürze Delicious für 1 - 2 Millionen US$ verkaufen. Yahoo hatte die Bookmarking Website im Dezember 2005 für einen unbestimmten Betrag von 15 - 30 Million US$ gekauft (Wikipedia), damit hätte Delicious 95% an Wert verloren.

Ich bin selber vor ein paar Wochen zu Google Bookmarks gewechselt, nachdem ich Delicious für etwa 6 Jahre benutzt habe. Für mich fehlte es der Bookmarking Website immer an einigen wichtigen Features, aber nach dem Verkauf an Yahoo verlor die Site sogar noch mehr an Relevanz: diverse Statistiken verschwanden zusammen mit einer breiteren Auswahl an populären Tags auf den "Popular Pages". Diese hatten dann in den vergangenen Monaten zunehmend mit Spam und Ausfallzeiten zu kämpfen.

FB deprecates FBML

Facebook is currently deprecating their proprietary markup-language FBML as of tomorrow. FBML offered simple, useful requests for FB-Apps. According to FB, this functionality will be taken over by their Javascript SDK and their Social Channels. Unfortunately, their documentation for both currently just produces error-messages, so it's hard to say how powerful and useful the two new options are going to be. Hopefully FB will fix this asap.

Tschüss FBML

Facebook stellt ab morgen die Entwicklung von FBML ein, ihrer proprietären Markup-Sprache. FBML stellte eine einfache und nützliche Möglichkeit dar, Datenaufrufe in der FB-Umgebung zu handhaben. Laut FB soll diese Aufgabe nun übernommen werden von ihrem Javascript-SDK und den sog. Social Channels. Leider erzeugt die Dokumentation dieser Tools zur Zeit nur Fehlerseiten, es läßt sich also im Moment nur schlecht sagen, wie hilfreich und mächtig die neuen Optionen sind. Hoffentlich wird FB das so schnell wie möglich entknoten.

This falls clearly under the category of "hey, we've got a cool domain-name, but ...uh oh... did anybody know we must comply with Sharia Law?"

While Bit.ly and Co. will not suffer from the current Libyan Internet-blackout (as Bit.ly CEO John Borthwick notes: "of the five root nameservers for the .ly TLD, two are based in Oregon, one is in the Netherlands and two are in Libya", Mashable), there already is a precedent that .ly-domains must comply with Islamic law.

RIP Delicious

Because its code-base has been so deeply integrated with several of Yahoo's systems, a sale of Delicious is unlikely. The days of the bookmarking-service seem to be numbered.

With all its shortcomings and updates which made Delicious less rather than more relevant (e.g. lesser social metrics), I have used the service myself for the past 5 or 6 years on a daily basis. Parts of Delicious seem to experience more and more downtimes since the past two weeks. Maybe it's time to move on -- heck, maybe I even switch back to manage my bookmarks offline.

Die tiefe Integrierung von Delicious mit verschiedenen Systemen von Yahoo macht einen Verkauf des Bookmark-Service unwahrscheinlich, die Tage der Website scheinen gezählt.

Trotz seiner Mängel und der Updates, die die Relevanz der Seite eher gesenkt als gesteigert haben (z.B. weniger einsehbare soziale Metrik-Daten), habe ich Delicious in den vergangenen 5 - 6 Jahren täglich verwendet. Mittlerweile scheinen Teile des Service häufiger auszufallen; vielleicht ist es an der Zeit sich anders zu orientieren -- vielleicht fange ich sogar wieder damit an, meine Bookmarks offline zu verwalten.

Yep, you heard it before -- but what's the news here? The memory footprint of Flash doubled or tripled after upgrading from Flash-player 9 to 10 last or last-last year (from my own observation on a Mac). It's not uncommon that a complex Flash-app will immediately kick-start the fan.

Why Unity won't suffer from hardware-accelerated Flash

Adobe will deliver hardware-acceleration for 3D for Flash in the first half of 2011. They are going to add a new Adobe Labs-page about this key-feature in the next months.

I read a comment on Gamasutra that this spells trouble for Unity3D next year. I beg to differ, mainly out of three reasons:

First: Market-penetration

Of course Flash has a dominant market-penetration with its installed plug-in base. But new hardware-accelerated features will require the latest Flash-plugin (probably version 11). Moreover, Unity seems to have a different approach to its plugin-architecture: more logic seems to be inside compiled code, rather than in the plugin itself; the upgrade from Unity 2.6 to 3.0 did not require any new plugin installation. Furthermore, Unity also caters to the gaming-console-market.

Second: Unity is focussed

Flash is a great all-round-tool, while Unity concentrates on 3D-media and -games. Flash is capable of a lot more, but Unity is better at the things its meant for. Just compare the working-metaphors of Flash and Unity: since the advent of AS3, the mode of operation for Flash changed more and more to "do everything in code" (especially when working with Flex). Unity uses a lot of drag & drop and so-called "exposed properties", which accelerates many production steps.

Third: the production-pipeline counts

Integrating a good production-pipeline is crucial for working with 3D and games. Unity has the edge over Flash here: you simply drop more or less any file-format into your working folder and it immediately becomes usable in Unity. That's a huge difference to the hoops you need to jump through to import complex 3D-assets into one of the large 3D-engines for Flash like Away, Sandy etc. I have written VRML-parsers myself for Sandy and Away in the past years, switching to Unity was a real eye-opener for me.

Warum hadwarebeschleunigtes Flash keine Konkurrenz für Unity ist

In der ersten Hälfte 2011 gönnt Adobe Flash endlich Hardwarebeschleunigung für 3D. In den nächsten Monaten wird es für diese Funktionalität einen neuen Adobe-Labs Bereich geben.

In einem Bericht von Gamasutra las ich den Kommentar, daß Unity sich im nächsten Jahr einigen Schwierigkeiten gegenübersehen wird. Ich sehe das anders, und zwar aus drei Gründen:

Erstens: Marktdurchdringung

Sicher hat Flash gegenüber Unity einen gewaltigen Vorsprung was seine Plugin-Marktdurchdringung angeht. Aber für die neuen 3D-Hardware-Fähigkeiten wird man den neuesten Flash-Player (vermutlich Version 11) benötigen. Zudem: Unity hat offenbar eine andere Philosophie bei seinem Plugin als Adobe -- es scheint mehr Logik im kompilierten Code als im Player zu stecken; so war z.B. beim Umstieg auf das brandneue Unity 3 kein Plugin-Upgrade nötig. Außerdem eröffnet Unity Zugang zum Marktsegment der Konsolenspiele.

Zweitens: Unity ist fokussierter

Flash ist ein Allround-Tool, Unity konzentriert sich auf 3D-Medien und Spiele. Sicher "kann" Flash mehr, aber Unity ist besser in den Dingen, für die es gedacht ist. Das zeigt sich für mich z.B. in der Arbeitsmetapher: seit dem Umstieg auf AS3 ging die Arbeitsweise von Flash immer mehr dazu über, alles durch Programmierung zu lösen (vor allem wenn man mit Flex arbeitet). Bei Unity kommen Drag & Drop und "Exposed Properties" zum Einsatz. Damit lassen sich einfache Arbeitsschritte sehr schnell erledigen.

Drittens: die Produktions-Pipeline zählt

Der Einsatz von 3D hängt stark von der Qualität der Integration der Produktions-Pipeline ab -- und hier hat Unity eindeutig die Nase vorn: man kann ein (fast) beliebiges 3D-Objekt in den Projektordner ziehen und dieses steht dann in Unity zur Verfügung; ein Riesenunterschied zu den Problemen hat, aufwendigere Objekte in einer der gängigen 3D-Flash-Engines (Away3D und Konsorten) zu verwenden. Ich habe in den vergangenen Jahren selber VRML-Parser für Sandy und Away geschrieben. Der Umstieg auf Unity war da ein echter Augenöffner.

Wer hätte das gedacht: Apple machte gestern bekannt, daß sie von nun an doch cross-kompilierte Inhalte für iPhone und iPad zulassen werden -- dies hatte Apple vor einigen Monaten in einem ihrer SDK-Agreement-Updates blockiert:

"In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need."

Man darf gespannt sein, ob sich nun eine Flut von Flash-Apps anbahnt.

Lo and behold! Apple announced just yesterday that they are going to relax their rules for cross-compiled content on iPhone and iPad:

"In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need."

It'll be exciting to see if there will be a flood of Flash-Apps and how this going to influence the future of HTML5

Apple drops nuke on Adobe and developers

The day before yesterday, Daring Fireball's John Gruber was the first to point out that iPhone OS 4 SDK bans cross-compiled applications, promoted as a key-feature for Adobe's upcoming Flash CS5:

"Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited)."

Flash evangelist Lee Brimelow weighed in at his TheFlashBlog:

"What they are saying is that they won’t allow applications onto their marketplace solely because of what language was originally used to create them. This is a frightening move that has no rational defense other than wanting tyrannical control over developers and more importantly, wanting to use developers as pawns in their crusade against Adobe. This does not just affect Adobe but also other technologies like Unity3D...
Speaking purely for myself, I would look to make it clear what is going through my mind at the moment. Go screw yourself Apple."

As the dust starts to settle, it does not seem to be clear though, if this was a move by Apple solely to kick Adobe in the sternum. AppleInsider reports today:

"But if Apple were simply trying to block Adobe from cross-compiling Flash to create iPhone apps, it could have added the changed text to its existing license agreement and spoiled Adobe's CS5 party immediately, rather than just threatening change that appears fated to kick in when Apple delivers iPhone 4.0 in June...

The primary reason for the change, say sources familiar with Apple's plans, is to support sophisticated new multitasking APIs in iPhone 4.0. The system will now be evaluating apps as they run in order to implement smart multitasking. It can't do this if apps are running within a runtime or are cross compiled with a foreign structure that doesn't behave identically to a native C/C++/Obj-C app.

'[The operating system] can't swap out resources, it can't pause some threads while allowing others to run, it can't selectively notify, etc. Apple needs full access to a properly-compiled app to do the pull off the tricks they are with this new OS,' wrote one reader under the name Ktappe."

Personally, I am more interested if Unity3D will be affected by this rule as well (as expressed by many other users in the Unity3D-Developers' Forum). In a posting at Unity's official blog, CEO and co-founder David Helgason points out today:

"Here at Unity, we are working hard on getting good information, and working to understand whether – or how – the new changes could affect the developer community and others. We have reached out to both official and unofficial contacts at Apple, we are talking to other companies in a similar situation to us, and we’ve been diligent in reading the ToS to get to the best legal (and business-wise) analysis of it.

We haven’t heard anything from Apple about this affecting us, and we believe that with hundreds of titles (or probably over a thousand by now), including a significant proportion of the best selling ones, we’re adding so much value to the iPhone ecosystem that Apple can’t possibly want to shut that down.

Our current best guess is that we’ll be fine. But it would obviously be irresponsible to guarantee that. What I can guarantee is that we’ll continue to do everything in our power to make this work, and that we will be here to inform you when we know more – as soon as we know more."

It's hard to say how Unity3d might be affected; it produces Xcode and Objective-C source files more like a pre-processor rather than a cross-compiler. But then again, Unity-developers are coding in C-Sharp and Javascript, which seems to violate the point of "only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs." This might be an issue, but could probably be fixed with a Unity-update; Unity3D's team is known for such fixes, as Helgason points out:

"In the ancient days of the App Store (July 2008), Apple changed the kernel to disallow JIT (just-in-time) compilation. We worked around this by changing Mono to AOT (ahead of time) compile scripts instead (this is why some dynamic constructs in our JavaScript doesn’t work on the iPhone). It was a lot of work, but we made it work to enable all these amazing Unity games to be sold in the App Store..."

Apple torpediert Adobe und Entwickler

Während sich die ersten Staubwolken legen, scheint es nicht völlig klar zu sein, ob es wirklich Apples Hauptintention war, Adobe in der verlängerten Rücken zu treten. AppleInsider berichtet:

Ich bin persönlich eher daran interessiert, ob Unity3D ebenso von dieser Regelung betroffen sein wird (genau wie viele weitere Nutzer im Entwicklerforum). Heute reagierte CEO und Gründer David Helgason in Unitys offiziellem Blog:

Es ist schwer abzuschätzen, inwiefern Unity betroffen sein wird. Unity erzeugt Xcode und Objective-C-Quelldateien und verhält sich eher wie ein Prä-Prozessor als ein Cross-Compiler. Andererseits schreiben Unity-Entwickler Code in C-Sharp und Javascript, was eventuell die Bedingung "only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs" betrifft. Dies könnte ein Problem darstellen, allerdings ließe sich das vermutlich in einem weiteren Unity-Update fixen. Das Unity-Team ist durchaus bekannt für solche Workarounds, wie David Helgason klarstellt:

Facebook silences Hong Kong Opposition

South China Morning Post yesterday broke news about how Facebook repeatedly deleted groups of political opposition in Hong Kong:

"A Facebook group with 84,298 members formed to oppose the pro-establishment DAB was deleted

Kelvin Sit Tak-O, who runs a discussion group that opposes the pro-establishment party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), said his group’s Facebook page was shut down without notice on Thursday. The group had 84,298 members and was aiming for 100,000... The closures could have been triggered by opponents flagging the group as “abusive” with Facebook administrators, Mr. Sit speculated. A spokesperson for Facebook was not immediately available for comment."

As blogger Joanne Ooi cites:

"'Apart from my own group, I've heard that other groups with an anti-DAB message have also been closed. We've written complaint letters, but we've only received standard replies about how [Facebook] is working on this case,' Sit said. ...

Kelvin told me that although the original page is still down, he relaunched a new page, which has already hit 50,000 members since it launched 3 days ago."

Hong Kong's DAB is a pro-Beijing political party. Party leader Ma Lik denies the Tiananmen massacre, as Wikipedia has it.

Hong Kongers have always seen themselves as China's last bastion of free speech -- it's sad to see how this is jeopardized by Facebook's supposed anticipatory obedience.

South China Morning Post berichtete gestern drüber, wie Facebook wiederholt Gruppen der politischen Opposition in Hong Kong gelöscht hat:

"A Facebook group with 84,298 members formed to oppose the pro-establishment DAB was deleted

Kelvin Sit Tak-O, who runs a discussion group that opposes the pro-establishment party, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), said his group’s Facebook page was shut down without notice on Thursday. The group had 84,298 members and was aiming for 100,000... The closures could have been triggered by opponents flagging the group as “abusive” with Facebook administrators, Mr. Sit speculated. A spokesperson for Facebook was not immediately available for comment."

Blogger Joanne Ooi ergänzt:

"'Apart from my own group, I've heard that other groups with an anti-DAB message have also been closed. We've written complaint letters, but we've only received standard replies about how [Facebook] is working on this case,' Sit said. ...

Kelvin told me that although the original page is still down, he relaunched a new page, which has already hit 50,000 members since it launched 3 days ago."

Hong Kongs DAB ist eine pro-Peking Partei. Parteichef Ma Lik hat laut Wikipedia das Tiananmen-Massaker geleugnet.

Hong Konger sehen sich gerne als Chinas letzte Bastion der freien Meinung. Schade, wie das von Facebook (vermutlich in einem Akt von vorauseilendem Gehorsam) torpediert wird.

Google reported cyber attacks to its network, originating from China and reportedly targeting email-accounts of Chinese human rights activists, as David Drummond, Google's Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer writes:

"In mid-December, we detected a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China that resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google...

...we have evidence to suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists... Only two Gmail accounts appear to have been accessed, and that activity was limited to account information (such as the date the account was created) and subject line, rather than the content of emails themselves."

Drummond concludes that Google will react by not un-censoring all results on Google.cn from now on, which might even lead to shuttering their service in Mainland.

An impressive reaction -- with only a minor flaw. Google never had a substantial footing in China; according to various sources its market penetration is around 30%, whereas Baidu -- China's largest search-engine has a share of over 90%. I am guessing that their revenue from Mainland is insubstantial. I don't want to sound cynical, but it's a convenient moment to push human rights if it doesn't cost you anything. Google might even utilize this opportunity to exit the Mainland market without loosing their face before they fall flat like Facebook.

Eine beeindruckende Reaktion, mit nur einem kleinen Schönheitsfehler: Google war nie ein größerer Erfolg in China beschieden. Die Marktdurchdringung von Google in China liegt -- laut verschiedenen Quellen -- bei etwa 30 Prozent, während der Anteil von Baidu, Chinas größter Suchmaschine, bei über 90% liegt. Ich vermute, daß Googles Geschäftseinnahmen in der Volksrepublik immateriell sind. Ohne zynisch erscheinen zu wollen, ist es ein bequemer Augenblick, für Menschenrechte einzutreten, wenn es einen nichts kostet. Google könnte diese Gelegenheit sogar beim Schopfe packen, um aus dem chinesischen Markt auszusteigen, bevor es sein Gesicht verliert und auf die Nase fällt -- wie bereits bei Facebook geschehen.

I only use Twitter periodically, normally during business trips, to let my friends and colleagues know what I'm doing -- which was the primary reason for having a Twitter-account in the first place. My tweets are admittedly scarce and of no interest for people who do not know me (and even for them, well....) -- all the more noticeable, that I steadily gained a few more followers during the past year (whom I do not know and do not follow back). I wonder about the motivation behind that; do all these people bet on the horse of old-fashioned Twitter-etiquette, where you were supposed to follow somebody who follows you? Or is this some weird sort of competition to follow as many people as possible -- ideally those, who would tweet as little as possible?

Twitter: Ökonomie der schweigsamen Freunde?

I benutze Twitter nur zeitweilig, normalerweise nur während Geschäftsreisen, um meine Kollegen und Freunde über meine Aktivitäten auf dem Laufenden zu halten -- was übrigens der Grund für mich war, überhaupt ein Twitter-Konto zu haben. Meine Tweets sind selten und wohl ohne jede Bedeutung für alle, die mich nicht persönlich kennen (und selbst für diese, aber lassen wir das...) -- umso merkwürdiger, daß mein Konto während des letzten Jahres einige neue Follower gesammelt hat (die ich nicht kenne und denen ich selber nicht folge). Was ist die Motivation dafür, frage ich mich? Setzen diese Follower alle auf die aus der Mode gekommene Twitter-Etikette, daß man denen folgt, die einem auch folgen? Oder ist dies ein seltsamer Wettbewerb, die meisten Nutzer zu verfolgen, idealerweise natürlich denen, die möglichst wenig neue Tweets einstellen?

Since yesterday, Facebook has introduced a new transition-tool to change privacy settings, seemingly in an effort to create more public activity for itself; all users who have never changed the default settings (everything set to private) will now have all their stuff set to public by default, unless you use the transition tool and set all radio-buttons to "old settings".

Facebook vs. StudiVZ

I nearly missed this piece: Facebook lost its lawsuit against German competitor StudiVZ. FB claims that StudiVZ infringes on FBs design and features, and that StudiVZ illegally stole source-code from Facebook. Well, at least the first claim seems to be pretty obvious; the only even more blatant FB-clone I can think of is its Chinese copycat Xiaonei (they did not even change the colors, like StudiVZ).

IMO German jurisdiction concerning Internet cases is inconsistent and weird at best, maybe a reason for this verdict. The court seems to have argued that "StudiVZ isn’t trying to trick users into thinking they are actually on Facebook. Another factor in favor of the German site: When StudiVZ went live in Germany in November 2005, Facebook was virtually unknown in that country."

Hmm, so it's okay to clone a web-service in Germany as long as the original is not really that well-known here, and as long as you do not pretend to be them; this seems to contradict normal German trademark-law -- I need to keep this in mind...

Facebook gegen StudiVZ

Das hätte ich beinahe verpasst: Facebook hat im ersten Anlauf seine Klage gegen den deutschen Mitbewerber StudiVZ verloren. In der Klage bezichtigte FB StudiVZ, Design und Features kopiert zu haben, zudem ging es um illegal entwendeten Quellcode. Zumindest der erste Klagepunkt erscheint ziemlich offensichtlich; den einizigen noch frecheren FB-Klon, den ich kenne, ist das Chinesische Netzwerk Xiaonei (die haben sich noch nicht einmal die Mühe gemacht, so wie StudiVZ die Farben von FB abzuändern).

Meiner Meinung nach ist die Deutsche Rechtsprechung in bezug auf das Internet gelinde gesagt seltsam und wenig nachvollziehbar. Vielleicht ist das auch der Grund für dieses überraschende Urteil. Das Gericht entschied offensichtlich zugunsten von StudiVZ, da diese nicht aktiv vorgeben, FB zu sein und da FB beim Start von StudiVZ in Deutschland nicht bekannt genug gewesen sei: "StudiVZ isn’t trying to trick users into thinking they are actually on Facebook. China's government-enforced security-hole

The mainland government is soon to introduce a new local censorship software, called Green Dam, which is going to be required on all PCs sold in the country. The even lesser funny news here: Green Dam contains a serious security loophole, which can be exploited by any website the user visits -- issues that were discovered at the University of Michigan in less of 12 hours of examining Green Dam. As their report has it:

"Once Green Dam is installed, any web site the user visits can exploit these problems to take control of the computer. This could allow malicious sites to steal private data, send spam, or enlist the computer in a botnet. In addition, we found vulnerabilities in the way Green Dam processes blacklist updates that could allow the software makers or others to install malicious code during the update process.

We found these problems with less than 12 hours of testing, and we believe they may be only the tip of the iceberg. Green Dam makes frequent use of unsafe and outdated programming practices that likely introduce numerous other vulnerabilities."

That reminds me a bit of the German online tax-declaration system Elster... ;)

Von oben verordnete Sicherheitslücke

Demnächst wird die Regierung der Volksrepublik eine neue Zensursoftware namens Green Dam einführen, die dann zwangsweise auf neu-verkauften PCs installiert sein muß. Das pikante Detail: Green Dam enthält diverse schwere Sicherheitsmängel, die praktisch von jeder Website ausgenutzt werden können, die ein User besucht. Die Lücken wurden von der University of Michigan nach weniger als 12 Stunden Analys entdeckt. Die entsprechende Studie beschreibt die Situation wie folgt:

New Last.fm Player sucks

Yesterday, Last.fm launched their all new, glossy music-player -- the main new feature basically being a larger display with a picture slide-show (which will inevitably start to feature some advertisement too, as far as I got it from Mashable). This new player sucks on Mac. If I run Safari/Last.fm besides any other open application, my MacBook's fan immediately kicks in -- something that never happened before with the old player. Pity, I really liked Last.fm, but I think I will stop using it as of now (since there seems to be no easy way to pull a Last.fm-radio-stream into iTunes without installing some other bull extra tool)...

Seit Gestern verwendet Last.fm einen neuen aufpolierten Player, dessen hauptsächliches neues Feature eine größere Dia-Show-Funktion ist (welche wohl in der nahen Zukunft mit Werbung integriert werden wird, wenn ich Mashable richtig verstanden habe). Dieser neue Player ist wirklich Mist auf meinem MacBook -- wenn ich nun Safari/Last.fm neben irgendeiner weiteren laufenden Applikation starte, fängt augenblicklich mein Lüfter an zu arbeiten; das ist mit dem alten Player nie passiert. Schade, ich mochte Last.fm wirklich, aber werde jetzt wohl keine Musik mehr dort hören (da es scheinbar auch keinen einfachen Weg gibt, einen Last.fm-Radio-Stream in iTunes abzurufen, ohne sich ein zusätzliches Helfer-Tool zu installieren)...

Facebook/StudiVZ lawsuit continues

It was always obvious that German social network StudiVZ is a blatant copycat of Facebook. But yesterday Facebook has filed for injunctive relief because StudiVZ allegedly has even stolen FB's source-code. I would find it absolutely jaw-dropping if this would turn out to be true (irrespective if the original owner of this intellectual property is really Facebook or rather ConnectU).

Facebook/StudiVZ Rechtsstreit geht in eine weitere Runde

Das das deutsche soziale Netzwerk StudiVZ ein Klon von Facebook ist, war ja eigentlich schon immer klar. Gestern allerdings hat Facebook StudiVZ auf Unterlassung verklagt, weil StudiVZ angeblich FBs Programm-Code gestohlen hat. Das war mir neu und würde bei mir echtes Kopfschütteln auslösen, wenn es sich bewahrheiten sollte (völlig unabhängig davon, ob die Programmierung nun ursprünglich von Facebook oder ConnectU stammt).

Mehr dazu gibt es bei Heise. Kommentatoren des Heise-Artikels mutmaßen übrigens, daß Praktikanten den Code bei FB kopiert haben.

I'm back to Germany by now. On the day of my flight, my notebook was hosed -- the bios got scrapped, leaving me with the choice to repair that old notebook yet again or to go for something new. I am writing this posting from my new MacBook, so much for the decision I made. Frankly, I was sick of working with Windows and my old Fujitsu-Siemens had failed me already for the third time, costing me a lot of nerves and precious time; thus, it was pretty much a no-brainer. It's good to be back on Mac, everything feels well-known and comfortable. Windows be gone...

Ich bin wieder in Deutschland. Am Tag meiner Abreise ist mir mein Notebook wieder einmal abgeraucht. Diesmal hat das Bios den Geist aufgegeben -- womit ich vor die Wahl gestellt war, das alte Fujitsu-Siemens wieder einmal reparieren zu lassen, oder mir ein komplett neues Notebook zu holen. Just how deep is Flash player penetration anyway?

Asks PCPro's Tom Arah. It was about time somebody asked this question. Says Arah:

"...The first of these reveals that the total number of PCs is based on a forecast made two years ago – an age in internet time. Already then the margin of error on numbers at least is enormous... The second reveals that the figure is based on devices capable of reading Flash player 7 content. To be fair to Adobe they do give the penetration stats for different player releases and thanks to auto-updating the figure for the latest Flash player 10 is already around 55%... The third note is the most significant:
“Total Player penetration is a calculation of the total number of PCs connected to the internet, multiplied by the weighted percentage of worldwide penetration from the Millward Brown study. This is an assumption made by Adobe.”
On top of which the underlying numbers on which such a major claim are built seem tiny with an apparent total survey sample size of 4,600 ie around 0.0005% of the suggested 956,000,000 total (and then weighted according to the CIA World Factbook!)..."

I remember the time when Flash 4 was around, when penetration rates climbed very slowly; then, it must have been the transitional period of Flash 4 to 5 (or 5 to 6, I'm not entirely sure here), the figures jumped to around 99% from one month to another, with each new player version consistently starting out at above 50-60 percent of penetration. And that was that. I ever doubted these figures from that moment on. Now, please don't get me wrong -- Flash is totally ubiquitious, and my own work heavily depends on it. I just kept wondering about the real penetration figures all along.

With the stated 5% margin of error, Adobe has already reached a whopping 104 percent of market penetration, now that is something...

Ich erinnere die Zeit, als Flash 4 aktuell war, und die Nutzerzahlen von Flash sehr langsam anstiegen. Während der Übergangsperiode von der 4er- zur 5er-Version (oder von 5 zu 6, ich bin mir hier nicht ganz sicher), stiegen die Zahlen innerhalb weniger Monate sprunghaft auf 99 Prozent an. Seitdem stiegen neue Flash-Versionen nach ihrer Veröffentlichung meistens bei über 50-60 Prozent Marktanteil ein. Dieses Muster hat sich innerhalb der letzten 5 Jahre nicht verändert -- ich habe mich seitdem immer gefragt, ob man diesen Werten trauen darf und wie hoch der Marktanteil von Flash wirklich ist. Aber bitte, um Mißverständnissen vorzubeugen: Flash ist allgegenwertig, das möchte ich nicht bestreiten -- der Großteil meiner eigenen Arbeit beruht auf immerhin auf Flash.

Mit der angegeben 5 prozentigen Fehlerspanne hat Adobe bereits eine Marktdurchdringung von satten 104 Prozent erreicht, das ist doch schon mal was...

'Tis the season

It was quite a new experience to me, to see my own apartment building on fire (no, not figuratively speaking). I just spend a quarter of an hour in a rescue van, because it's just too cold to be waiting outside with just a training-pant and a thin shirt on, while the fire is extinguished and any smoke gas ventilated. I didn't took a closer look at the fourth floor, where the fire broke out; I'm just thankful that I'm living a few floors below and wouldn't need to worry about any water damage... Now back to work...

Hm, ist mal was Neues, wenn es im eigenen Haus brennt (nein, nicht bildlich gesprochen). Ich habe gerade eine dreiviertel Stunde in einem Rettungswagen verbracht, weil es einfach zu kalt ist, um in Trainingshose und T-Shirt draußen darauf zu warten, bis der Brand gelöscht ist und die Rauchgase entlüftet wurden... Ich habe mir die vierte Etage, wo der Brand ausgebrochen war, nicht näher angeschaut, und bin ziemlich froh, daß ich einige Stockwerke darunter wohne und mit keinem Wasserschaden zu rechnen habe... Up until a few years ago, I had a profile at OpenBC/Xing, which unfortunately cannot be deleted, once you created an account and want to leave Xing alltogether. The next best thing you can do is just delete every possible data from your account. Guess what happens then? Today I received an email from Xing (sorry, in German only), pointing out that my account was blocked, cause I was violating the TOS. Dear Xing-team, you must be kidding me. What else is a disgruntled user supposed to do then? Oh, I know, adding Xing to my spam-filter...

Liebe Leute bei Xing, mein (seit etwa 3-4 Jahren nicht mehr benutztes) Profil enthält keine personenbezogenen Daten, weil es keine Möglichkeit gibt, einen einmal angelegten Account zu löschen, um komplett aus Xing auszusteigen (jedenfalls damals nicht, wie gesagt, ich habe seit über 3 Jahren nicht mehr reingeschaut). Was bleibt dem hilflosen Anwender da anderes übrig, als zumindest alle eigenen Daten soweit wie möglich zu löschen? Oh ich weiß... einen Spam-Filter für Xing-Emails einrichten. Der Schwachsinn kennt keine Grenzen, seufz...

Windows Crash

A few days ago my notebook suffered from a severe crash, for the second time in two years (last time my graphic-card was hosed)--effectively keeping me from my work for four consecutive days, sigh... Thank goodness, Martin could help me to fix the problem, which luckily turned out as a software-crash and not as a damaged hard-drive, as I had first suspected. Thx, Martin! Back to work... :)
By the way: we thought about a drink or two in the next few weeks (before I'm heading to Hong Kong), probably at the Christmas-market. Anybody interested?

Windows abgeraucht
Vor ein paar Tagen ist mal wieder mein Notebook abgeraucht, zum zweiten Mal in zwei Jahren (das letzte Mal hatte meine Grafikkarte den Geist aufgegeben) -- was mich mal wieder 4 Arbeitstage gekostet hat, seufz.... Glücklicherweise konnte mir Martin helfen, das Problem zu beheben, das sich als Softwarecrash entpuppte (puh) und nicht als beschädigte Festplatte, wie ich zuerst dachte. Nochmal danke Martin! Zurück an die Arbeit... :)
Übrigens: wir hatten daran gedacht, demnächst wieder einen heben zu gehen, vielleicht auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt (aber definitiv vor meiner Abreise nach Hong Kong). Wie wärs?

New software-patents’ ruling really rocking the boat?

A new ruling on software-patents by the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) was sending shockwaves through the internet during the past few days. As Techdirt’s Mike Masnick describes: “court has said that there’s a two-pronged test to determine whether a software of business method process patent is valid: (1) it is tied to a particular machine or apparatus, or (2) it transforms a particular article into a different state or thing. In other words, pure software or business method patents that are neither tied to a specific machine nor change something into a different state are not patentable… Well, it may take some time to digest, but it’s likely this will be appealed to the Supreme Court, so that process may take a while.”

It’s an interesting and lively discussion which left me with the impression that it might be too soon to be too happy about the ruling--after all, the according laws are not changed but interpreted differently. If the ruling will really and finally be reaffirmed by the Supreme Court, the industry of virtual worlds and social networks would also be affected--as Mashable’s Adam Ostrow rightfully points out: “In essence, the ruling means that business ideas in and of themselves aren’t patentable. In addition to Amazon’s “one-click” patent, which is the concept of purchasing something via credit card by just clicking a single website link, Friendster’s patents on social networking also come to mind as being unpatentable based on this judgement.”
The Jaipuria-patent (currently held by LinkedIn, as far as I know) and the Friendster-patent belong to the most powerful patents in terms of social networks. They protect features like automatically setting up somebody you’ve invited as your buddy, or graphically displaying the degree of separation between two members.

In the case of Coobico, we tried to discover and circumvent relevant networking-patents like the Friendster-patent. E.g. our invitation-procedure is currently designed like this: you invite somebody, who subsequently sets up his/her new Coobico-account. Both of you then receive a message asking you to accept each other as buddies. It’s just one example which shows that it’s possible to come up with reasonable (and reasonably different) user interfaces when facing software-patents.

Es folgte eine interessante und aufgeregte Debatte, die bei mir den Eindruck hinterließ, daß es noch zu früh wäre, um bereits vom Abgesang der Software-Patente zu sprechen—immerhin ändert sich nicht das Gesetz; es wird eingeschränkt und uminterpretiert. Sollte jedoch das oberste Gericht die Rechtsauffassung unterstützen, wird das auch Auswirkungen auf die Welt der virtuellen Welten und sozialer Netzwerke haben—wie Adam Ostrow bei Mashable ganz richtig anmerkt: “In essence, the ruling means that business ideas in and of themselves aren’t patentable. Das Jaipuria-Patent (das z.Zt. LinkedIn gehört, soweit ich weiß) und das Friendster-Patent gehören wohl zu den derzeit noch mächtigsten Patenten im Bereich sozialer Netzwerke: sie schützen Features wie z.B. das automatische Verknüpfen eines von mir eingeladenen Nutzers als neuen Freund oder die grafische Darstellung, über welche Bekannte zwei Benutzer in Beziehung miteinander stehen.

Im Falle von Coobico haben wir natürlich versucht, relevante Patente wie das Friendster-Patent zu studieren, um sie erfolgreich zu umgehen. Zum Beispiel sieht unser Einladungs-Mechanismus derzeit wie folgt aus: man lädt einen Freund/eine Freundin ein; dieser/diese legt einen neuen Coobico-Account an; danach erhalten beide eine Meldung, die darauf hinweist, sich gegenseitig als Freund zu akzeptieren. Nur ein Beispiel wie man trotz nerviger Software-Patente dennoch zu vernünftigen Lösungen in der Benutzerführung kommen kann.

Too many trillionairs bothering Fable 2?

For their much anticipated Fable 2, Peter Molyneux and his developing team were pondering about a way to engage players even before Fable is going gold and eventually came up with the idea to let players earn in-game money by virtual gambling. A nice idea (maybe that would be interesting for Coobico lol) which led to the offer of "Fable 2 Pub Games". After the release of Pub Games though, a bug in one the mini-games called Tower of Fortunes was quickly discovered which can be exploited to earn gazillions of in-game gold (check out this YouTube-video). This will probably escalate to a major problem for the Fable 2 developers; Gold can be used to buy equipment and personal features for your character in Fable 2, as well as to own city-buildings and castles if you are rich enough to afford them, as Molyneux mentioned in an early developer's walkthrough.

The developing-team seemingly tried to patch the problem, albeit with no success, as the video indicates.

What will happen to the balance of the multiplayer-title, if thousands of players will start the game as trillionairs? Just deleting the yielded profits to get rid of this problem doesn't seem to be the best solution: while some players got Pub Games as a free goodie after pre-ordering Fable 2 from participating retailers, other spend US$10/800 points for their XBLA download of the mini-games. Also, this would mean to piss off die-hard fans which might spell a PR-nightmare for the upcoming title.

Zu viele Billiardäre in Fable 2?

Peter Molyneux und das Entwicklerteam von Fable 2 haben kürzlich "Fable 2 Pub Games" veröffentlicht -- eine prima Idee, um die wartenden Fans bereits auf den langerwartete Multiplayer-Titel vorzubereiten (das wäre vielleicht auch etwas for Coobico, kicher). Mit Hilfe der Mini-Glücksspiele läßt sich berteits vor Spielstart In-Game-Währung für das Spiel verdienen. Nach dem Release wurde jedoch schnell ein Fehler in einem der Glücksspiele namens Tower of Fortune gefunden, den man ausnutzen kann, um in kürzester Zeit zum In-Game-Billiardär zu werden (siehe dieses YouTube-Video). Dies könnte sich noch zu einem größeren Problem für das Fable-Team ausweiten, denn die so erspielte Währung kann im Hauptspiel benutzt werden, um den eigenen Charakter zu personalisieren und auszurüsten -- oder gar Gebäude und ganze Burgen erwerben, wenn man denn genügend Geld besitzt, wie Molyneux in einem frühen Entwickler-Interview berichtete.

Das Entwicklerteam scheint mit dem Versuch, dem Problem mit einem Patch Herr zu werden, bislang nicht erfolgreich gewesen zu sein, wie man dem Video entnehmen kann.

Es läßt sich zur Zeit kaum abschätzen, wie sich der Pub Games Bug auf die Spielbalance in Fable 2 auswirken wird, wenn tausende von Teilnehmern das Spiel als Billiardäre beginnen. Die erspielten Gewinne wieder zu löschen, erscheint jedenfalls nicht als einfacher Ausweg: einerseits haben viele Spieler (die die Minigames nicht als kostenlose Dreingabe teilnehmender Händler erhalten haben) für ihren XBLA Spieldownload 10 US-Dollar, bzw. 800 Donwload-Punkte ausgegeben. Andererseits würde man damit eine Kerngruppe von Hardcore-Fans erzürnen, was zu einem PR-Alptraum für Fable 2 werden könnte.

3D/Flash

3D in Flash had remained in relative obscurity until last year, because Actionscript was just not fast enough to power more than some bland, unimpressive 3D-scenes. However, with the advent of AS3, Flash made a major leap. Around February 2008, the three most ubiquitous open-source 3D-engines Papervision, Away3D and Sandy3D published their recent installments, which lead to an explosion in the usage of 3D in Flash. For Coobico, I made an in-depth assessment of these three engines shortly thereafter, to decide which one would be most suitable to our creative vision and our production pipeline from 3D to Flash.

Sandy3D is the oldest of the frameworks, one of its branches is even available for AS2. Papervision, being a bit younger, was available in its effects- and “Great White"-branches up until now, but it was announced that both branches will be merged into Great White shortly. Away3D originally was a Papervision-derivative, but made some impressive improvements on its own after breaking with Papervision.

In fact, Away3D offers one of the most powerful packages of the three: it comes with a lot of features, shaders and the most different types of parsers (notably an .obj-parser), and does a very good job with z-sorting. However, I found various in-depth tasks (like re-assigning textures on the fly) a bit counter-intuitive to me. Talking about textures, phong-shading of rectangular shapes can lead to funny results, due to triangulation issues (i.e. one polygon of a shape is shaded while the other one stays unshaded). The biggest let-down of Away3D might be the lack of documentation (as usual). By the time I was checking it out, it was hard to find any documentation for any of the in-depth features--I finally decided against Away3D, cause there was not enough time to rummage through tons of undocumented classes, just to find out what they might actually be doing. Please notice though, that this is already a few months ago: if documentation of Away3D has improved in the meantime, I would highly recommend it, if you want to get into 3D.

Papervision, even though having earned a good reputation with a large community of developers, was a bit of a let-down to me in the end. It was lacking a few of the standard-features of the other two competitors, namely native support of 3D-sound and 2D-sprites. Phong-shading had the same problems as Away3D. Again, this was a few months ago, and I didn’t checked back in the meantime. It might very well be that PV3D has already implemented more features in the meantime.

Sandy, last but not least, is not as hyped as Away and PV3D, but its thorough set of features and rendering-capabilities is on par with Away3D (even though it admittedly needs to improve its z-sorting). All of its packages are very well documented, with quite a few tutorials available, because this engine is around just for such a long time already. Maybe this is also a reason why I felt that understanding Sandy was most easy and intuitive. Then there is a neat feature to turn down the quality of shapes from triangular to rectangular, which eliminates shading-artefacts of boxes, very important for Coobico.

Ultimately, I decided that Coobico would be developed with Sandy, because it felt most compatible. There are other solutions like Sharikura, which seemingly encompasses all other engines, but which is not yet publicly available, and Alternativa, a commercial solution, which yet has to prove if it can handle very large scenes with animations.

3D/Flash

Bis ins letzte Jahr spielte 3D in Flash eine eher untergeordnete Rolle, da Actionscript 2 einfach nicht schnell genug war, um mehr als kleine, unspektakuläre 3D-Szenen zu rendern. Dies hat sich aber mit AS3 komplett gewandelt, und führte dazu, daß im Februar die aktuellen Releases der drei am weitest-verbreiteten 3D Open-Source-Engines Papervision, Away3D und Sandy3D veröffentlicht wurden—was sehr zur Verbreitung von Flash-basierten 3D-Anwendungen führte. Ich habe kurz danach die drei Engines ausprobiert, um herauszufinden, welche für Coobico am ehesten kompatibel ist.

Sandy3D ist das älteste der drei Frameworks, eines der Releases ist sogar noch in AS2 erhältlich. Papervision ist ein wenig jünger und war bislang in zwei Versionen verfügbar (Effect-Branch und Great White), diese sollen aber demnächst zu einer Version zusammengeführt werden. Away3D ist ein Papervision-Derivat, hat aber seit seiner Abspaltung von PV3D sehr beeindruckende Fortschritte gemacht.

Genau genommen bietet Away3D mit die mächtigsten Bibliotheken, hat eine Menge verschiedener Shader und Parser (vor allem ein .Obj-Parser) im Angebot. Das Framework macht auch eine sehr gute Figur beim Z-Sorting, ein derzeitiges Problemfeld der Engines. Trotzdem empfand ich tieferliegenden Routinen als eher unintuitiv (z.B. das dynamische Verändern von Texturen). Zum Thema Texturen: sowohl bei Away als auch bei PV3D gibt es einige Darstellungsartefakte beim Phong-Shading von rechteckigen Körpern, wohl ein Problem der Triangulation, bei der ein Polygon einer Fläche geshadet und das andere ungeshadet dargestellt wird. Ich habe mich schließlich gegen Away3D entschieden, weil weite Teile der Engine (wie bei den meisten Flash-Frameworks) unkommentiert waren. Es ist einfach kontra-produktiv, wenn man sich durch zahlreiche Klassen durchwühlen muss, um ihren Sinn und Zweck zu ergründen. Aber wie gesagt, das liegt nun schon einige Monate zurück, ich kann hier nichts dazu sagen, ob sich die Dokumentation von Away3D mittlerweile verbessert hat. In diesem Fall würde ich Away3D wärmstens empfehlen.

Papervision hat bereits einen guten Ruf bei einer großen Entwicklergemeinde. Ich fand aber, daß PV3D insgesamt weniger Features bietet als seine Konkurrenten, z.B. den Einsatz von 3D-Sounds und 2D-Sprites. Das Phong-Shading hat dieselben Probleme wie Away3D. Auch hier noch einmal die Anmerkung, daß sich die Situation in den letzten Monaten vielleicht bereits verändert hat.

Zum Thema Sandy3D scheint es nicht soviel Hype im Internet zu geben, obwohl Sandy es meiner Meinung nach problemlos mit Away3D aufnehmen kann, sei es nun bei der breiten Menge seiner Features, als auch bei der Geschwindigkeit seiner Rendering-Engine—Sandy muß allerdings zugegebenerweise noch seine Hausaufgaben im Bereich Z-Sorting machen. Alle Packages sind sehr gut dokumentiert und es gibt eine große Anzahl von Tutorials, die auf alle wichtigen Punkte eingehen (vermutlich weil es Sandy bereits so lange gibt). Vielleicht auch ein Grund, warum ich den Einstieg in Sandy deutlich intuitiver fand als bei den Konkurrenten. Sandy bietet zudem ein für Coobico sehr nützliches Feature: durch das Drosseln der Polygon-Qualität von dreieckig zu rechteckig lassen sich Darstellungsartefakte beim Shading rechteckiger Körper unterdrücken.

Zu guter letzt habe ich mich dafür entschieden, daß die Entwicklung von Coobico auf Sandy basieren soll, die Engine erschien am kompatibelsten mit unserem bisherigen Code und unserer Produktions-Pipeline.

Es gibt natürlich auch noch weitere 3D-Frameworks, diese Liste ist nicht erschöpfend—da wäre z.B. Sharikura zu nennen, eine Lösung, die alle anderen in den Schatten zu stellen scheint, z.Zt. aber leider noch nicht öffentlich zugängig ist. Und dann wäre da noch Alternativa, ein kommerzielles Produkt, das sehr beeindruckend wirkt, aber bislang noch nicht bewiesen hat, wie gut es sehr große Szenen und Animationen handhaben kann.

Facebook is going to so not conquer Mainland?

Said Paul Glazowski of Mashable two days ago: "Watch out Xiaonei, Xiaoyou, and anyone else taking cues from what is now perhaps the most popular network in the world. The real Facebook has come to town. China, that is. Yes, big town."
Frankly I'm not so bullish about FB China; IMO Facebook is not going to conquer the Mainland market. How do I know this? Because almost all other western web-services before them failed to do so too, no matter how successfully they entered other overseas-markets before. Even MySpace currently only ranks on place 12, pretty much behind everybody else.

Without a full-scale local subsidiary (including server-infrastructure, FB's Chinese language cersion links to zh-cn.facebook.com), any business is subject to China's Net-Nanny, a problem that local competitors mostly do not have--and Facebook especially has to face very strong competitors (or copy-cats, for that matter); Beijing-based Facebook-clone Xiaonei with an investment of USD 430 million from Softbank even has a larger founding under their belt than the original.
While western products still have the kool-aid-factor in China, this is not entirely true for web-services, where intimate knowledge of local cultural norms, values and needs gives the competitive edge.

Frederic Lardinois at Read Write Web contemplates that since "most of Facebook's growth at this point is coming from outside of the United States, it only makes sense for Facebook to target the rapidly growing Chinese Internet market, which now boasts a larger online population than the US." What he forgets to mention, though, is that the size of the Chinese internet-market only ranges in the ballpark of countries like the netherlands when comparing general web-expenditures and -earnings (as far as I remember figures from last year).

Let's see if FB is heading to down the same road as everybody else. Now, please, I'd love to hear some comments to prove me wrong... ;)

Facebook gelingt die Eroberung der Volksrepublik ...nicht?
Kürzlich vermeldete Mashables Paul Glazowski über den Eintritt von Facebook in den chinesischen Markt: "Watch out Xiaonei, Xiaoyou, and anyone else taking cues from what is now perhaps the most popular network in the world. The real Facebook has come to town. China, that is. Yes, big town."
Sorry, ich kann den Optimismus über den Erfolg von FB in der Volksrepublik nicht ganz teilen. Meiner Meinung nach wird Facebook China floppen -- woher ich das weiß? Weil es beinahe allen anderen westlichen Web-Services vorher auch schon so ergangen ist. Selbst Brachenriese MySpace findet sich unter Chinas Netzwerk-Seiten nur auf Platz 12 und trägt damit mehr oder weniger die rote Laterne.

Die chinesische Sprachversion von FB verlinkt auf zh-cn.facebook.com -- ohne einen kompletten Ableger vor Ort mit eigener Serverstruktur ist jedes Business anfällig für die große chinesische Firewall. Ein Vorteil für lokale Konkurrenten (oder auch Klone), die es für FB in China in Hülle und Fülle gibt. Xiaonei, ein FB-Klon aus Peking hat mit einer Risikokapitalspritze von Softbank in Höhe von 430 Million US-Dollar sogar eine größere Kriegskasse als das Original. Und während westliche Produkte in der Volksrepublik einen besonderen Coolness-Faktor besitzen, trifft dies auf westliche Web-Services in nicht so starkem Maße zu. Im chinesischen Internet gewinnt detailliertes Wissen über lokale kulturelle Begebenheiten die Oberhand.

Es ist zum Heulen. Seit Heute Nachmittag läßt sich Gmail in Deutschland nicht mehr unter Gmail.com erreichen. Statt dessen wird eine blanke Seite mit dem folgenden Hinweis serviert:

HK is dangerous, at least online

Two days ago IT security provider McAfee published the new version of its Most Dangerous TLDs Report, as announced on CNET before. According to McAfee, this years' most malware ridden TLD is .hk--which caught some commenters and me by surprise after reading CNET's announcement (as CNET linked to last year's version of the malware report). Last year, HK was on position 28, in the ballpark of a few european TLDs (like Belgium)--even 20 places better than domains from the US. This means that during the past months the threat-level of .hk-domains jumped by a stunning 27 places, even surpassing Mainland China!

Says research analyst Shane Keats: "Even if the greatest percentage of dangerous sites use the .hk domain, that doesn't mean they are all based in Hong Kong or that more malware distributors are located there... Many sites, particularly the malicious software sites, choose the most affordable domain registrars in countries with the least regulation, so usually they are not located in that country..."

Last time I checked on local HK-domains, they came at a hefty extra-charge (one of the reasons why Linking People's web-address is a .com). I wonder if this duty was changed during last year? Anybody any ideas?

The malware report is an interesting read, I had already asked myself sometime ago if such information is available somewhere.

Vor zwei Tagen wurde der neue Malware-Report von Sicherheitsfirma McAfee veröffentlicht, in dem das Ranking von Schadprogrammen verschiedener TLDs gelistet wird, wie zuvor von CNET angekündigt. Laut McAfee ist die "gefährlichste" TLD in diesem Jahr .hk -- dies hatte mich (und einige andere Kommentatoren) zunächst überrascht, denn der CNET-Artikel verlinkte auf die veraltete Version des Reports aus dem letzten Jahr. In diesem Bericht belegte HK noch den Platz 28 und rangiert mit einigen Europäischen TLDs (und war um 8 Plätze besser als Domains aus den USA). In den vergangenen Monaten ist die Gefahreneinstufung um 27 Ränge auf Platz eins gesprungen, noch vor der Volksrepublik!

Als ich das letzte Mal nachgeschaut habe, waren .hk-Domains nur für eine heftige Sondergebühr zu haben (einer der Gründe, warum Linking People eine .com-Adresse hat). Ich frage mich, ob diese Konzession im vergangenen Jahr abgeschafft wurde -- hat jemand eine Idee dazu?

Memory management in Flash is a mess -- the excellent gBlog offers a simple component which monitors framerate and memory-allocation through drag & drop. Nifty! I was looking for something similar for quite a while.

I met for a coffee-session with Erik Chan yesterday. Erik was formerly working as game-developer at Activision and Midway is now active in Asia as a serial entrepreneur. We've talked about our current projects and the general situation of the gaming-industry -- interesting reach-out.
Tomorrow night I'm going to catch my plane to Germany, time was too short again. Seems like I need to unpack my winter-clothes with the current weather conditions in Germany.

Endspurt
Gestern habe ich mich zu einer Kaffee-Session mit Erik Chan getroffen, der früher als Spieleentwickler bei Activision und Midway gearbeitet hat und nun unternehmerisch in Asien unterwegs ist. Coobico and Google Translations

Now this really too cool: Google finally offers an API to its language-tools – it was about time. A certain kind of translation to Coobico’s chat-interface was planned all along, and after pondering for quite a while on the actual realization, we decided to use some kind of automated approach, translating chat-bubbles among players with different language-settings on the fly. There were quite a few free, open-source, unofficial solutions available during the past years which could be queried against Google’s translation page or Yahoo’s Babelfish (and of course the occasional premium services). Now, such hackerish approaches tend to break too easy, so it’s a relief to see Google’s translation APIs finally going live, featuring all languages of Coobico’s prime markets: English, German, French, Spanish and Chinese. While it is not sure yet if such auto-translations will already be a part of the closed beta, they will definitely be added further down the road.
Enough development-chitchat, back to work!

Das ist mal eine gute Nachricht: Google hat gestern seine offiziellen APIs zu Google Übersetzungen freigegeben – das war wirklich höchste Zeit. Wir hatten eine Art von Übersetzungs-Feature für Coobico’s Chat bereits seit längerer Zeit in Planung, und haben uns nach sorgfältigem Abwägen für eine Art von Auto-Übersetzung entschieden; Chat-Sprechblasen zwischen Spielern mit verschiedenen Spracheinstellungen werden automatisch in der richtigen Sprache dargestellt. Für eine solche Funktionalität gab es bereits seit einigen Jahren kostenlose, inoffizielle Open-Source-Lösungen, die Googles Übersetzungsseite oder Yahoo Babelfish abfragten (und natürlich verschiedene kostenpflichtige Services). Solche hausgemachten Ansätze sind aber leicht störanfällig, daher ist es erfreulich zu hören, daß Google nun eine offizielle Lösung für die Sprachen bietet, die in Coobico zum Einsatz kommen, namentlich Englisch, Deutsch, Französisch, Spanisch und Chinesisch. Es ist zur Zeit noch nicht klar, ob dieses Übersetzungsfeature bereits während des geschlossenen Beta-Tests implementiert sein wird, es wird aber definitiv so schnell wie möglich eingebaut werden.
Genug Entwickler-Geplauder, zurück an die Arbeit!

I can't help but put forward my 0.2 bucks on the current rants on Flash, iPhones and Apple's latest iPhone SDK-campaign: a few days ago Apple announced that the iPhone is now essentially "Enterprise Ready" and "Developer Ready", read an article about it at Techcrunch.
At the same time Steve Jobs weighed in on the iPhone's web-capabilities, to be more specific, how Adobe Flash is not suited for iPhone:

"As Jobs put it Tuesday, Apple's iPhone, with all its cutting-edge mobile Internet trickery, needs something much better than the current Flash player that Adobe makes for cellphones. The Flash Player option that fits the bill is made for devices like laptops that are larger than the iPhone; as a consequence, it performs too slowly on the iPhone, he said.
"There's this missing product in the middle," Jobs said."

Personally, I don't buy attempted explanations like battery-life and performance-issues, even though it's granted that Macromedia never achieved the same performance of Flash-players on a Mac than on Win-PCs, at least not up until the recent years. To me, the iPhone equals an utterly walled, proprietary system and business-model. If Apple would have integrated Flash into the equation, it would have ultimately killed its cash-cow. With Flash it would have been a breeze for developers to deliver third-party apps to the iPhone and circumvent Apple's revenue-model. Apple rather wants you to take part in its boarded-up developers' programm, which comes at US$99, and what's more, heavily restricts access to the device's functions through Apple's iPhone Human Interface Guidelines -- which somewhat supports my argument. And while it might or might not be true that Flash was already seen running on iPhones in a lab according to Robert Scoble, this hardly matters to the average user. If the iPhone is really one of the spearheads of true mobile web and as a role-model for future devices, then I see internet on handsets jeopardized.

Ich muß einfach mal meine 2 Groschen zur derzeitigen Diskussion über Flash, iPhones und Apples neuestes iPhone-SDK loswerden. Vor ein paar Tagen wurde dieses von Apple vorgestellt, mit der Punchline das iPhone sei nun "Enterprise Ready" und "Developer Ready" -- den vollen Artikel dazu gibt es bei Techcrunch. Gleichzeitig liest man Interviews von Steve Jobs über die Einschränkungen des iPones in Bezug auf das Internet, genauer gesagt, die Unzulänglichkeiten von Flash für das iPhone.

Ich kaufe Apple und anderen Kommentatoren die Erklärungsversuche über Batterieverbrauch und die Performanz des Players nicht ab, auch wenn es stimmt, daß Macromedia es nie richtig hinbekommen haben, dem Flash-Player für Macs eine ähnliche Leistung wie auf PCs zu verpassen. Für mich liegt der Hauptgrund in fehlenden Kontrollmöglichkeiten. Das iPhone ist ein komplett zugesperrtes System und Geschäftsmodell. Flash zu unterstützen, hätte für Apple bedeutet, den eigenen Goldesel vorzeitig zu schlachten. Auf Flash-unterstützen iPhones wäre es für Drittanbieter ein Leichtes gewesen, Softwareangebote auf das iPhone zu bringen, die Apples Einnahmequellen unterlaufen. Statt dessen möchte Apple Teilnehmer für sein SDK-Programm gewinnen, das 99 US$ kostet und vor allem den Zugang zum iPhone durch Apples iPhone Human Interface Guidelines stark eingrenzt -- was in gewisser Weise meine Meinung stützt. Es mag (oder mag nicht) stimmen, daß Flash auf iPhones bereits in Labors gesichtet wurde, wie Robert Scoble berichtet, das macht für den Mainstream aber kaum einen Unterschied. Wenn das iPhone wirklich zur Speerspitze des mobilen Internets gehört und anderen Anbietern als Paradebeispiel dient, dann gute Nacht.

Adobe talks Flash

Omygod, Adobe announced its next intended feature for Flash: DRM. I could think of a couple of important things, where Flash would urgently need to catch up, but DRM is really none of them. Still, with the growing importance of web-video, a lot of companies might have just been looking for this.

Funny: both Sony and Time Warner have placed an undisclosed investment in Gaia Online, right after Gaia announced DRM-movie-functionality for their massive chat-world under license of Widevine. Now a comparable feature comes hard-wired into Flash, much to the rejoice of the competition.

BTW, to whom it may concern: Microsoft brings Silverlight 2, now with better .Net-Integration, *chucks*.

Adobe über neue Flash-Features
Es ist zum Heulen, der nächste von Adobe angekündigte Streich für Flash zielt in Richtung DRM. Mir fallen auf Anhieb eine Menge Dinge ein, bei denen Flash dringenden Nachholbedarf hätte, aber DRM gehört sicherlich nicht dazu. Nichtsdestotrotz werden wohl mit der wachsenden Bedeutung von Videos im Netz viele Anbieter auf solch eine Funktionalität gewartet haben.

Bemerkenswert: Sony und Time Warner investierten in Gaia Online, nachdem diese unter Lizenznahme von Widevine eine kopiergeschützte Einbindung von Filmen in ihren Flash-basierten massiven Online-Chat anbieten konnten. Nun kommt eine vergleichbare Funktionalität für Flash ab Werk auf den Markt, da freut sich die Konkurrenz.

Übrigens, vielleicht interessiert es jemanden mehr als mich: von Silverlight kommt ebenfalls demnächst eine neue Version heraus, mit verbesserter .Net-Einbindung.

Release 6 of Drupal

The brand new Drupal version 6 has been released shortly -- there is a screencast comprising its new features, namely a simplified installation, a more user-friendly drag-and-drop administration back-end and support for OpenID (which is the real killer-feature to me).
After building quite a few websites with Drupal, I am personally not shilling too much for it any more. Don't get me wrong here, Drupal is great with all its networking features and homebrew-plugins; but I eventually grew annoyed of two of its characteristics:

First, I don't like Drupal's on-site administration. An admin-area is not supposed to be handled in the same space like the website it dishes out, in my opinion.
Second, and rather unnerving to me is the code Drupal produces, which is cluttered with unnecessary mark-up (like div's) wrapping each and all of its contents. The bottom line is, I found myself writing preg_replace functions to strip undesirable pre-formatted contents from most designs.

After working with CMSs for about two years, my light-bulb moment was finding that each CMS has its own philosophy; Drupal's approach then to me is, you only need a few clicks and you already got a (pre-formatted) site. While this is useful in some situations, it's counter-productive in others. A CMS with a completely different attitude is ExpressionEngine, which I'm using quite a lot at the moment (I'm building Coobico with EE, for example). EE's unique strength is that nothing is preset by default. You need to build every detail yourself, giving you unmatched control.

There is nothing else to it but to keep yourself familiar with two or three different CMSs for different specifications, I guess.

Drupal 6
Das brandneue Drupal 6 steht seit ein paar Tagen zum Download bereit. Hier ist ein Screencast, der alle Neuheiten vorstellt, insbesondere eine vereinfachte Installation, Administrieren durch benutzerfreundliches Drag & Drop, und vor allem: Unsterstützung von OpenID (das echte Killer-Feature für mich).
Nachdem ich bereits ein paar auf Drupal basierende Websites gebaut habe, bin ich allerdings kein echter Drupal-Fanboy mehr; Drupal ist schon klasse, wenn es um Community-Websites oder die Auswahl selbstgebastelter Plug-Ins geht. Aber zwei Umstände ärgern mich bei Drupal:

Erstens: die Administration erfolgt bei Drupal im selben Website-Umfeld und im selben Design, wie die Seite, die es betreibt. Das Endprodukt eines CMS und sein Admin-Bereich gehören getrennt, meiner Meinung nach. Und zweitens: der Code, den Drupal produziert, ist überfrachtet mit unnötigem Mark-Up -- jeder Inhaltsblock wird z.B. in div's verpackt. Im Endeffekt musste ich für fast jedes Design eine Preg_Replace-Funktion schreiben, um unerwünschte Gestaltungselemente los zu werden.

Mein Aha-Erlebnis nach etwa 2 Jahren Arbeit mit CMS war, daß jedes CMS auf einer eigenen Philosophie fußt. Die von Drupal ist meiner Meinung nach, daß man mit wenigen Klicks eine lauffähige (vorformatierte) Website aufsetzen kann. Das kann nützlich aber auch kontraproduktiv sein.
Ein CMS mit einem radikal anderen Ansatz ist ExpressionEngine, welches ich zur Zeit sehr häufig einsetze, z.B. auch beim Aufbau von Coobico. Bei EE wird bewußt auf alle vorgefertigten Bauteile verzichtet, es muß alles von der Pike auf selber geschrieben werden. Dies verleiht eine unerreichte Kontrolle über das Endergebnis.

Es bleibt einem wohl nichts anderes übrig, als sich mit mehreren CMS für unterschiedliche Anforderungen vertraut zu machen.

Post Chinese New Year

It's the first week after Chinese New Year and I'm in Hong Kong for eight days by now. The fireworks over the harbor at Tsim Sha Tsui was really astonishing -- the pyrotechnists even managed paint the words "Beijing" in Chinese letters and "2008" into the sky. The rest of the time I spent busily at my working-cubicle.

One press release since New Year caught my attention (for obvious reasons): the German Post closes down its virtual presence in Second Life. Bear with me, that's not it yet -- the German Post reasoned:

"Um Second Life als Werbeplattform zu etablieren, ist die Zahl der Nutzer nach Meinung von Experten zu gering. Im Dezember waren in Deutschland 665.000 Nutzer registriert, aber nur 42.000 bewegten ihre Figuren länger als eine Stunde im Monat."
(the number of accounted members of SL in Germany is 665.000, but only 42.000 of them show up in SL for more than an hour per month)

According to popular estimation, the amount of active users' share of all registered users is around 13% in many massive online-worlds (like in Habbo Hotel, too). You generally don't get more exact figures, this is why I found the German Post's communication noteworthy: either the German market with its percentage of 6% is a gross outlier for SL, or the rate of participation in SL ist generally overestimated.

Post Neujahr
Sorry für das billige Wortspiel, aber ich bekomme noch die Kurve zum Thema... ;)
Dies ist die erste Woche nach dem chinesischen Neujahrsfest, ich bin jetzt seit etwas mehr als einer Woche in Hong Kong. Das Feuerwerk über dem Hafen in Tsim Sha Tsui Ende letzter Woche war wirklich fantastisch -- die Feuerwerker haben es sogar hinbekommen, die Worte "Peking" in chinesischen Schriftzeichen und "2008" in den Himmel zu zeichnen. Ansonsten habe ich meine Zeit am heimischen Rechner verbracht.

Eine Meldung im neuen Jahr fand ich interessant (aus offensichtlichen Gründen): die Deutsche Post schließt ihre Niederlassung in Second Life. Naja, das ist jetzt nicht die Welle, aber in der Pressemitteilung der Post fand ich ein Detail besonders interessant:

"Um Second Life als Werbeplattform zu etablieren, ist die Zahl der Nutzer nach Meinung von Experten zu gering. Im Dezember waren in Deutschland 665.000 Nutzer registriert, aber nur 42.000 bewegten ihre Figuren länger als eine Stunde im Monat."

Laut allgemeinen Schätzungen liegt die Rate von aktiven Usern im Vergleich zur Zahl der Gesamtanmeldungen in Second Life bei rund 13% -- ein Prozentsatz der bei vielen anderen Online-Welten (wie z.B. auch bei Habbo Hotel) sehr ähnlich ist. Genaueres erfährt man da normalerweise nicht, deshalb ist die Verlautbarung der deutschen Post so interessant. Entweder der deutsche Markt ist mit seinem Prozentsatz von 6% aktiver Teilnehmer ein krasser Ausreißer für Second Life, oder die Teilnehmerrate bei SL ist im allgemeinen überbewertet.

Dave thinks that the next evolution of Digg could be the following: "Or we could do a Digg-like community with 25 people by invitation, some you've heard of, some you haven't. All would be voracious news junkies. They would be empowered to add articles, comment on them, vote them up or down. I would invite Scoble, Fred Wilson, Steve Rubel, Amyloo, Jim Posner, Lawrence Lee and (I'm sure I'll think of many more). We'd count on the judgement of these people to find us interesting news items, and be fair in deciding their relevance."

Well, a group of two dozens of news-junkies reporting about interesting news -- that pretty much sounds like the concept of a team of journalists working for a news office. We are close to come full circle...

Next Nielsen Bruhaha

Recently I came across Get Elastic, an interesting blog about e-commerce. One of its postings is about a piece from Jacob Nielsen, which I had nearly missed: "Web 2.0 can be dangerous."
His bottom-line: "While a modest 2.0 infusion can be beneficial, advanced features are rarely the most important contributor to good user experience or profitable websites. If you get caught up in the hype, you divert attention and resources from the simpler things that really matter. This opportunity cost is the real reason to take it easy on Web 2.0."
Get Elastic's posting takes notice of a possible fallacy in Nielsens argument, as pointed out by GrokDotCom's Howard Kaplan: with the rise of usability being seriously taken into account by a large number of websites nowadays, conversion rates for certain tasks (like completing a purchase at an online-store) didn't improved respectively, they are even rather trending downwards (according to Shop.org).

Nielsen then elaborates that most Web 2.0- and community-features are not suitable for the general public anyway, but should work better on company intranets:

"A company's employees are an actual community with a crucial shared interest: succeeding in business. Employees are pre-vetted: they've been hired and thus presumably have a minimum quality level. In contrast, on the Web, most people are bozos and not worth listening to."

Beg your pardon? Sorry, but in my opinion this is really elitistic bullcrap. From my own experience, Company-communities tend to utterly fail (in contrast to public communities) by intertia-creep. They have a tendency to be build-up top-down, often without taking into account if their users (the employees) are really willing to take part.
Every community, even every single features on a website should help to solve their users' problems to save them time and trouble as good as possible. That's usability to me.

Das nächste Nielsen-Gelächter
Kürzlich bin ich auf Get Elastic gestoßen, ein sehr interessantes E-Commerce-Blog. Ein Posting, das ich dort gefunden habe, trägt den Titel "Jakob Nielsen Thinks Web 2.0 Sucks. Is He Right?" und bezieht sich auf einen Artikel von Jacob Nielsen, den ich beinahe verpasst hätte: "Web 2.0 can be dangerous."

Nielsen's Fazit: "While a modest 2.0 infusion can be beneficial, advanced features are rarely the most important contributor to good user experience or profitable websites. If you get caught up in the hype, you divert attention and resources from the simpler things that really matter. This opportunity cost is the real reason to take it easy on Web 2.0."

Get Elastic hält ein Zitat von GrokDotComs Howard Kaplan dagegen, welcher auf eine interessante Schwachstelle des gesamten Usability-Diskurses hinweist:

"So, a better question for Jakob would be, with so many of the top sites focusing on usability for so many years, why aren’t Conversion Rates any higher? According to the latest Shop.org numbers, they’re not even trending upward."

Ein weiteres Argument Nielsens: Web 2.0- und Community-Features sind besser für Firmen-Intranets als für das Internet geeignet:

"A company's employees are an actual community with a crucial shared interest: succeeding in business. Employees are pre-vetted: they've been hired and thus presumably have a minimum quality level. In contrast, on the Web, most people are bozos and not worth listening to."

Wie bitte? 'Tschuldigung, aber das ist meiner Meinung nach elitistischer Unsinn. Meinen eigenen Erfahrungen nach haben Firmen-Communities die Tendenz an allgemeiner Trägheit zu scheitern -- viel eher als öffentliche Web-Communities; sie werden allzu häufig von oben herab durchregiert und aufgebaut, ohne Rücksichtnahme ob die potentiellen User (die Angestellten) Interesse an einer Teilnahme haben oder nicht.
Jede Community (oder prinzipiell jedes Detail einer Website) sollte spezifische Probleme ihrer Nutzer lösen und ihnen soviel Zeit und Nerven wie möglich sparen, das ist für mich gute Usability.

A few recommended reads from the past days: China Economic Review has an insightful recap about Yahoo's whistle-blowing incident about the fate of Chinese reporter and dissident Shi Tao. I find one assumption especially noteworthy:

Two more interesting tidbits about Mainland China: China Web 2.0 Review blogs about a report called "Studying Malicious Websites and the Underground Economy on the Chinese Web". According to this report, around 1.5 percent of China's 145.000 most commonly visited websites are infected with malicious code which might introduce trojans and viruses to their users' computers. Phew, I wonder about similar statistics for the US or Europe -- anybody any ideas?

And finally, check out this article from Danwei about Milk. Milk is an acclaimed magazine about pop-culture, style and design published in Hong Kong, which is now available in Mainland, too. The Mainland Milk does not seem to be as delicious as the original...:

Zwei weitere interessante Nachrichten aus der Volksrepublik: bei China Web 2.0 Review bin ich auf die Studie "Studying Malicious Websites and the Underground Economy on the Chinese Web" gestoßen. Diese gibt an, daß etwa 1,5 Prozent von Chinas 145.000 meistbesuchten Websites mit schädlichen Programmen und Viren infiziert sind, die die Rechner von Besuchern betreffen können. Hm, mich würde mal eine vergleichbare Statistik für Europa oder USA interessieren. Irgendwelche Ideen?

Und, zu guter Letzt: hier ein Artikel bei Danwei über "Milk". "Milk" ist ein beliebtes Magazin aus Hong Kong über Popkultur, Style und Design, das nun den Sprung in die Volksrepublik gewagt hat. Allerdings scheint die Festlandmilch nicht mit dem Original mithalten zu können...

Facebook, possibly the planet's highest valued online-business, seems to soak up investments like a sponge currently. While the rumour about an upcoming hedge-fond investment might or might not be true, the $240 million they raise from Microsoft at the moment pushes the bar to a total funding of $338 million.
The newest investor to step into the ring is Hong Kong's illustrious billionaire and Asia's most powerful man 李嘉誠 Li Ka-Shing with an allotment of $60 million, with an option to invest another $60 million (according to AllThingsD).

Li Ka-Shing freut sich schon auf Facebook
Facebook, derzeitig das Online-Business mit dem möglicherweise höchsten Geschäftswert auf diesem Planeten, saugt zur Zeit Investitionen auf wie ein Hochlesitungsstaubsauger. Während man die Investition von 200 bis 500 Millionen durch zwei Hedgefonds im Moment getrost noch als Gerücht abtuen darf, kauft sich Microsoft derzeit mit 240 Millionen Dollar bei Facebook ein. Dadurch steigt das Kapital von Mark Zuckerbergs Geschäft auf 338 Millionen.
Als neueste Finanzspritze darf er sich auf weitere 60 Millionen des illustren Hong Kong Milliardärs 李嘉誠 Li Ka-Shing freuen. Asiens reichster und mächtigster Investor steigt zunächst mit 60 Millionen ein und behält sich vor, später nochmal weitere 60 Millionen nachzuschießen (laut AllThingsD).

PaidContent contemplates that Li's Tom Online might want to be entering a partnership with Facebook once they hit the Chinese market. Smart move, as Tom probably can't loose on such a deal, so they will want to get unto the Facebook-gravvytrain, no matter if they will succeed in China or not.
Remember Tom's latest bargain with eBay in February 2007? eBay had bought into the Chinese market with acquiring EachNet for $150 million in 2003, after initially investing $30 million into the company. Still, with a funding of an additional $100 million and a market-share of around 20 percent, they were not able to surpass the competing native Chinese auctioning-platform Taobao. Fast forward to 2007, eBay halted its business in Mainland by founding a joint venture with Li Ka-Shing's Tom Online. They paid another $40 million for a minority of 49 percent of all shares, raising their financial fiasco to to a whopping $320 million. Tom Online, in turn, with a bargain buy of $20 million for the remaining 51 percent assumed control of the business.
According to Seeking Alpha's Shaun Rein, eBay's failure was not only caused by a wrong market-strategy, but also by the US-headquarter's complete ignorance of their Chinese partner:

"One of eBay's biggest problems comes from how it handled decision-making between its headquarters in San Jose and its China operations. Exit interviews with former Eachnet and eBay executives in China indicate that senior management in China felt that headquarters "did not listen to them" at critical junctures. Instead, these former executives believe that San Jose directed from afar rather than trusting its China management to know what would work in China. This sentiment was especially true for executives from the original Eachnet team who felt belittled by the American team after the acquisition."

This pattern seems to repeat itself with the majority of all gweilo-companies trying to enter the Mainland market: foreign company can't ignore market in China -- company then buys into Chinese joint venture -- utter ignorance of cultural differences and ill communication take their toll -- foreign company fails utterly a few months or years later -- needs to write off or sell assets.
Frankly, I don't see why this should be any different with Facebook, especially with a lot of native competitors and copycats already in place (at least their newest monetizing-bruhaha should be in full compliance with China's whistleblowing-requirements). My guessing would be that their future Chinese venture will be up for grabs cheap for Tom Online later on. Tom themselves are in need to strengthen and consolidate their online portfolio, after suffering from losses incurred by their mobile side. According to paidContent, Tom Online was laying off 100 Editors some days ago.

Auf paidContent gibt es Mutmaßungen, ob Lis Tom Online-Service daran interessiert sein dürfte, mit Facebook ins Geschäft zu kommen, sobald sich diese auf den chinesischen Markt begeben. Das dürfte ein cleverer Schachzug sein, denn Tom wird dabei gewinnen, unabhängig davon ob Facebook in China Erfolg beschieden sein wird oder nicht.
Wir erinnern uns an das letzte Schnäppchen, das Tom Online im Februar 2007 geschlagen hat: eBay hatte sich 2003 mit der Akquisition von EachNet für 150 Millionen Dollar in den chinesischen Markt eingekauft, nachdem sie zuvor 30 Millionen in die Firma investiert hatten. Trotz einer Kriegskasse von weiteren 100 Millionen erreichten sie einen Marktanteil von knapp 20 Prozent und konnte damit Chinas Auktionsplattform Nummer Eins, Taobao, nicht das Wasser abgraben. eBay verabschiedeten sich wieder aus der Volksrepublik, indem sie ihr Geschäft in ein Joint Venture mit Tom Online einfließen ließen - sie bezahlten dafür weitere 40 Millionen für eine Minderheit von 49 Prozent, während Tom Online für ein Trinkgeld von 20 Millionen Dollar die Kontrolle mit 51 Prozent übernahm.
Einem Artikel von Shaun Rein bei Seeking Alpha zufolge scheiterte eBay in China nicht nur an einem falschen Geschäftskonzept, sondern auch an ihrer Ignoranz den lokalen Geschäftspartnern gegenüber:

Dieses Muster scheint sich bei der Mehrzahl aller Geschäftseintritte westlicher Unternehmen in den Markt in China zu wiederholen: Risiko nicht in China präsent zu sein ist größer als das Risiko in China zu scheitern -- westliches Unternehmen begründet daher Joint Venture mit chinesischem Partner -- Mißverständisse und das Ignorieren kultureller Unterschiede nehmen ihren Lauf -- westliches Unternehmen scheitert -- und hinterläßt oder verkauft den Rest des Geschäfts.
Wer weiß, ob es für Facebook anders laufen wird, vor allem da es bereits eine Menge an Mitbewerbern und Klonen gibt (zumindest das neuste Marketing-Desaster von Facebook scheint mit den Vorgaben der chinesischen Regierung sehr konform zu gehen). Schätzungsweise werden die rauchenden Überreste ihres Markteintritts in der Volksrepublik dann später zum Schnäppchenkauf für Tom Online werden. Tom muß sich jedenfalls auf dem Internetsektor bewegen und konsolidieren, nach einigen Verlusten ihrer Mobilsparte. Laut paidContent haben sie in den letzten Tagen wund 100 redaktionelle Mitarbeiter entlassen.

The World Economic Forum just published the new Global Competitiveness Report for 2007/2008. Germany's overall ranks on 5th place, nice. But if you dig deeper into the so-called pillars, the results look pretty different: In the pillar "Labor Market Efficiency" Germany has a rank of 47, thus competing with nations like Vietnam, Azerbaijan and Gambia. Alibaba worth the money? (But AliPay is)

I really admire the work of Jack Ma, Mainland China's jack-of-all-trades in internet-business -- he is really one of those be-there-first-pioneers. Still, when I read about the IPO of Jack Ma's Alibaba lately, I felt quite lukewarm about it. So Alibaba.com is trying to raise US$1.49 billion in an initial public offering, which would be the second largest technology IPO since Google. I can't help but wonder if Alibaba is really worth that much (but hey, if a domain like Facebook is supposingly worth 15 billion these days ;) ...)

Alibaba preiswert? (AliPay schon)
Ich mag die Arbeit des in China allgegenwärtigen Jack Ma -- er ist wirklich einer der chinesischen Internet-Pioniere der ersten Stunde. Nichtsdestotrotz würde ich gerne ein paar Zweifel anmelden zum Börsengang von Jack Mas Alibaba; mit 1,49 Milliarden US$ dem zweitgrößten seiner Art im Bereich Technologie (gleich nach dem von Google). Ich frage mich wirklich, ob Alibaba soviel wert ist -- aber hey, immerhin wird heutzutage eine Domain wie Facebook mit 15 Milliarden bewertet... ;)

Alibaba is (as far as I know) the world's largest B2B-clearinghouse-webservice. Chinese suppliers and manufacturers and overseas-dealers can strike trades on Alibaba.com. Alibaba makes you believe sourcing in Mainland China could be possible just through finding a business-partner on the internet -- of course that's grossly naive.
The excellent China Law Blog has a very insightful posting on the matter, picking up the topic from Paul Midler's China Game:

"It would be one thing if factories were like single people - dating websites enjoy a steady stream of new single customers - but manufacturing is not the same. In the long run (or sooner?), all capable manufacturers are known to the market. The website works best in a world with murky market data. We are heading away from that world, not towards it. There are already websites that allow companies to list information for free and Chinese are using these sites with greater frequency."

Alibaba's sister-site is Taobao -- Mainland China's eBay, the largest C2C-platform in China. Taobao failed to make money up until now, and (according to Jack Ma) will remain free of charge until 2008. Well, Jack Ma is faced with Hobson's choice here, cause he already failed to install advertisement- and keyword-sales-driven revenue for Taobao in May last year. Partially due to the outrage of its users, Taobao needed to revoke this idea.

Taobao is based on AliPay, Alibaba Group's answer to Paypal in China. Alipay works more like an escrow-agent than Paypal and thus gained a much higher trust and acceptance by users in Mainland (who otherwise seemingly don't trust each other). Now, in my opinion this is the asset in the Alibaba-deal which is worth every dime: Paypal miserably failed in China (like most big US-players), and with the dire situation of banks and credit-systems in China, AliPay is truely one of the most important services in Mainland at the moment.

Alibaba.com ist meines Wissens nach der weltweit größte B2B-Webservice. Chinesische Hersteller und ausländische Vetriebspartner können über die Plattform Geschäfte abschließen. Alibaba gaukelt seinen Nutzern vor, daß Sourcing und das Finden von Geschäftspartnern in der Voksrepublik über das Internet möglich wäre -- was natürlich absolut naiv ist.
Das sehr lesenswerte China Law Blog reagierte kürzlich mit einem sehr interessanten Posting auf einen vorangegangenen Artikel bei Paul Midlers China Game:

Die Schwesterdomain von Alibaba ist Taobao -- chinesische Version von eBay und größte C2C-Plattform in der Volksrepublik. Taobao warf bislang kein Geld ab und wird (laut Jack Ma) auch noch mindestens bis 2008 kostenfrei bleiben; Ma bleibt auch keine andere Wahl, denn er hatte bereit Mitte letzten Jahres erfolglos versucht, bei Taobao Einnahmen durch Werbung und Premium-Keyword-Angebote zu erzielen. Der Vorstoß mußte unter anderem durch die wütenden Reaktionen der Nutzer wieder zurückgenommen werden.

Taobao basiert auf AliPay, dem Paypal-Äquivalent der Alibaba-Gruppe. AliPay funktioniert stärker auf dem Treuhänder-Prinzip als Paypal und konnte daher unter chinesischen Usern (die sich offensichtlich ansonsten nicht genug über den Weg trauen) eine größere Akzeptanz und Verbreitung finden. AliPay ist für mich der wertvollste Bestandteil aller Webservices der Alibaba-Gruppe, denn Paypal ist (wie die meisten anderen großen US-Unternehmen) in China kläglich gescheitert. Durch das in China dürftig ausgebaute Netz von Banken und Kreditkarten wird AliPay auch in den kommenden Jahren in der Volksrepublik einen sehr wichtigen Webservice darstellen.

This week I sat down with Worlds in Motion's editor Leigh Alexander to talk about casual MMOs:

"'More' is the typical game-industry's approach to everything: more levels, more graphic power, more customization and even moreso, intertwining features. Here is a lesson that the game-industry can learn from the Web 2.0-world -- less is more, really," Winter opined. "Less is what a casual audience of above-30-year-olds are looking for. They don't want to waste their time and money on upgrading graphic-hardware just to play Crysis in all its beauty. They are looking for some thirty minutes of ease and challenge besides their working-life, their family and hobbies, instead of spending endless hours of grinding in an online-game."

Communities are the key to online worlds, Winter says -- and the current community within MMOs currently reflects, he notes, the industry's "max-out principle," where the learning curve to fully engage in the virtual society is steep. "This doesn't mix well socially with the casual market," Winter says. "Such social discrepancies -- almost like culture shock -- are among the biggest shortcomings of recent multiplayer-products."

Coobico going online

The reason why I'm pretty silent in the recent months (sorry, no twittering, Yves) is my current project Coobico. Coobico is essentially a web-community and a multiplayer-strategy-game, running on Flash. Think HabboHotel meets MySims.
It will stilll be a long road till its alpha-stage, but I'm going to post news about Coobico's progress as often as possible at coobico.com, so drop by and keep yourself updated.

Ich habe mich in den vergangenen Monaten zugegebenermaßen reichlich abgekapselt, um an meinem aktuellen Projekt Coobico zu arbeiten (daher leider die fehlende Zeit für Twitterings, sorry, Yves). Coobico ist ein Webchat und Multiplayer-Aufbauspiel, eine Mischung aus HabboHotel und MySims.

Jaipuria- und Friendsterpatent in der Grabenstellung?
Im Oktober wird in Chicago das Jaipuria-Patent versteigert, ein weiteres grundlegendes Patent im Bereich sozialer Online-Netzwerke. Amit und Pradeep Jaipurias Patent, das im Mai letzten Jahres ausgestellt wurde, gibt an, das Anlegen und Durchsuchen sozialer Netzwerke mit bestimmten Zugangsberechtigungen erfunden zu haben...

I'm no longer wondering about the weird practises of the U.S.-patent-system, software-patents and prior art, blabla yadayada. What really surprises me this time is the issuance of a patent seemingly contradictory to already existing intellectual properties. The Jaipuria-patent seems to be in conflict with the so-called Friendster-patent in various details, for example searching my and my peers' networks.
Does anybody have a clue about this?

Ich wundere mich längst nicht mehr über die seltsame Praxis des U.S.-Patentamts und amerikanische Software-Patente die geistiges Eigentum auf Ideen anmelden, die es schon Jahre zuvor gab. Was ich allerdings erstaunlich finde, ist die Bewilligung eines Patents, das sich mit bereits bestenden Patenten überschneidet; das Jaipuria-Patent scheint in einigen Details dem Friendster-Patent sehr ähnlich zu sein, z.B. bei der Suchfunktion.
Hat jemand ein Idee, wie so etwas zustande kommen kann?

Back on track

That was a pretty long blog-out. Some weeks ago, the graphic-card of my notebook was fragged and I needed to do without the computer for more than a week. When I finally got it back, I was quite relieved that my original system was not wiped out--that really saved me some time, I just needed one or two days to transfer my critical data back to the notebook. Afterwards I stuck my head deep into my work again, ugh.

Wieder an der Arbeit
Das war eine lange Blogpause. Vor einigen Wochen ist meine Grafikkarte abgeraucht, mein Notebook mußte zum Austausch eingeschickt werden. Ich mußte für etwa eine Woche auf meinen Rechner verzichten. Immerhin hatte ich das Glück, daß der Support nicht mein gesamtes System überspielt hat -- so dauerte es nur etwa 2 Tage, bis ich alle meine kritischen Daten wieder eingespielt hatte. Danach habe ich mich wieder in Arbeit eingegraben.

What did I miss in the meantime?
Mr. Wong lost their ugly logo in the meantime--a stereotypical chinese cartoon-figure, which aroused the irritation of a bunch of ABCs. As far as I remember, the founders of Mr. Wong were going for a competition to create a new logo for their german social bookmarking service. I was too busy ignoring this, cause I generally dislike the idea of leaving the design of your corporate identity to your audience.

Then there was Web 2.0 Startup Meetup in Hong Kong in August--thanks P.K. from Editgrid for pointing me to the event. I would have loved to show up, according to Angus Lau's posting at 852signals, it was seemingly a nice event.

Which brings me to "blog-day", which I missed out last week. Let me catch up with introducing some new items in my blogroll now: I already mentioned Angus Lau's 852signals, a fabulous blog about Web2.0 in Hong Kong. Another blog which got me hooked up is Lost Garden; Danc is writing a lot of solid material about game-design (some of his articles are being published at gamasutra). And last but not least: Olav Müllers brettspieler.blogspot.com (german only), nice to see you blogging, Olav. ;)

What am I going to miss?
On Sept 16-21, 2007, the Hong Kong web community will meet up at web gathering 3 for some chitchat with Jeremiah Owyang from PodTech of Silicon Valley. Was habe ich in der Zwischenzeit verpaßt?
Mister Wong haben auf ihr häßliches Logo verzichtet, die stereotype Darstellung eine lächelnden Chinesen -- welches in die Kritik einiger ABCs geraten war. Soweit ich mich erinnere, wollten die Macher von Mister Wong einen Wettbewerb für die Erstellung eines neuen Logos für den deutschen Bookmark-Service ausschreiben. Ich bin um den Verlauf dieser Idee allerdings nicht weiter am Ball geblieben, da ich es wenig glücklich finde, seinem Publikum das eigene Corporate Design zu überlassen.

Dann war da das Web 2.0 Startup Meetup in Hong Kong im August -- meinen Dank an P.K. von Editgrid, der mich darauf hingewiesen hatte. Ich wäre gern mit dabei gewesen, gemäß Angus Laus Eintrag in 852signals war es ein interessantes Treffen.

Was mich zum "Blog-Tag" bringt, den ich letzte Woche verpaßt habe; ich hole es deshalb schnell nach, ein paar neue Blogs in meiner Blogrolle vorzustellen: Wie schon erwähnt, ist da Angus Laus 852signals, ein sehr lesenswertes Blog über Web2.0 in Hong Kong. Außerdem lese ich in den letzten Wochen regelmäßig Lost Garden; Danc blogt dort sehr solide über Spieldesign (einige seiner Artikel wurden bei Gamasutra veröffentlicht). Und zu guter letzt: Olav Müllers brettspieler.blogspot.com -- freut mich, daß Du auch blogst, Olav. ;)

Was werde ich noch verpassen?
Am 16. - 21. September trifft sich die Web Community in Hong Kong zum Web Gathering 3 mit Jeremiah Owyang von PodTech aus dem Silicon Valley. Schade, ich bin zu der Zeit noch in Deutschland. Hier gibt es mehr über das Treff, für alle die reinschauen möchten. Ich gehe in der Zwischenzeit wieder an die Arbeit...

I'm on standby-set

This will be the last entry for some time coming from my notebook, which ceased to work yesterday and needs to be send in. Currently my whole system is fragged as soon as the graphic-card driver starts to work; seems like parts of the graphic-card are broken. At least I can do a full back-up of my data under safe-mode-like conditions and minimum screen-resolution.

During the past 3 months I was working like The Hulk on my current project, while Stefan and me migrated to our new server in Canada in the meantime. Originally I had a kind of developer's website for my work coming up next week--but right now I'll need to pause for goodness knows how long, until my system is repaired and restored.

Thanks to Martin I'm still going to have some kind of standby-set for basic works during the next days, but full work for my clients and my own projects will still be a bit severed meanwhile.

Bin auf Notaggregat
Dies wird erstmal mein letzter Eintrag von meinem Notebook aus, das ich nächste Woche in Reparatur geben muss -- ich arbeite z.Zt quasi im abgesicherten Modus, da es scheinbar Teile meiner Grafikkarte zerlegt hat. Zumindest kann ich mit abgeschaltetem nVidia-Treiber und bei Minimalauflösung ein Komplett-Backup meines Systems machen.

In den letzten 3 Monaten habe ich wie der Hulk an meinem aktuellen Projekt gearbeitet und zeitgleich migrierten Stefan und ich auf unseren neuen Server in Kanada; eigentlich wollte ich nächste Woche eine Art Entwickler-Website für mein Projekt veröffentlichen -- jetzt werde ich wohl für unbestimmte Zeit pausieren müssen, bis mein System repariert und wiederhergestellt ist.

Danke an Martin für das Notkit, auf dem ich in den nächsten Tagen zumindest rudimentär arbeiten kann, aber schätzungsweise wird die Arbeit für meine Kunden trotzdem nur eingeschränkt möglich sein.

Today I've installed Apple's brand-new beta Safari released for Windows--partially out of sheer nostalgia: I'm running Windows now for one and a half years and I'm already so sick about it, that I'm seriously starting to think about migrating back to Mac. Using Safari on Windows will sooth me until I'm ready to spend the next 2k bucks.
But of course my official reason is validation. It would be nice if developers on Windows could validate websites for Safari with this version, but I guess we're not that lucky. Probably Win-Safari and Mac-Safari will display quite different behaviours. Does anybody know more about this issue already?

Heute habe ich mir die brandneue Betaversion von Safari für Windows installiert -- offengestanden aus nostalgischen Gründen: mein Windows-Notebook ist jetzt knappe anderthalb Jahre alt und Windows macht mich mittlerweile echt krank. Mit Safari auf Windows kann ich mich vielleicht über die Zeit hinwegtrösten, bis ich mal wieder 2 Riesen hinblättern kann, um auf einen Mac zurückzukehren.
Der offizielle Grund für die Installation ist aber natürlich die Validierung; es wäre wirklich klasse, wenn Entwickler auf Windows mit dieser Version von Safari Websites für den Mac validieren könnten. Aber vermutlich haben wir soviel Glück nicht. Wahrscheinlich werden sich die Safaris auf Mac und Windows komplett unterschiedlich verhalten. Oder weiss bereits jemand mehr über dieses Thema?

No, I'm not dead, just too busy to post anything in the recent month. Anyway, I pretty much felt like dead during and after my flight from Hong Kong this time, having caught a severe stomach-virus there. But I'm back to normal, finished a job for Gramm/Land Rover in the meantime and am working like crazy on my private projects right now.
Stefan and me will move our webspace to a new server in the US (very probably) soon, then I will post more on my current efforts.

Jaa, ich bin nicht tot, nur zu sehr in Arbeit eingespannt, um zur Zeit etwas zu posten. Allerdings fühlte ich mich halb verstorben auf meiner Rückreise aus Hong Kong, denn ich hatte mir da einen derben Magenvirus eingefangen. Ich bin wieder auf dem Damm und habe in der Zwischenzeit einen Job für Gramm/Land Rover fertiggestellt; und im Moment arbeite ich bis zum Umfallen an privaten Projekten.

Chan, dem CEO von Team and Concept, auf einen Kaffee getroffen.

P.K. just came back from the US, where TnC showcased their product Editgrid at the recent Under the Radar Conference: why Office 2.0 matters. Editgrid is an impressive collaborative online spreadsheet-editor, just out of beta.
What I like about Editgrid is its clean design. P.K. and me discussed why so many Hong Kong websites feature a seemingly dull and unprofessional design. Agreed, webdesign doesn't matter so much in Hong Kong, but its websites are an important part of Hong Kong's global media-presence--and mostly the only thing being visible overseas. So it seems to be a too easy way out for the majority of businesses here, to skip web-design (or internet-adoption, for that matter) alltogether.

Anyway, it was a nice reaching-out and I guess I will try to keep contact to P.K. and TnC for some potential synergy effects.

P.K. war gerade zurück aus den USA, wo TnC die kürzlich gelaufene Konferenz "Under the Radar: why Office 2.0 matters" besucht und ihr Produkt Editgrid vorgestellt haben. Editgrid ist eine beeindruckende, kollaborative online-Tabellenkalkulation, die gerade aus der Betaphase heraus ist.
Was mir an Editgrid gut gefällt, ist das sehr aufgeräumte, minimalistische Design. P.K. und ich haben uns darüber unterhalten, warum soviele Hong Konger Websites eher unprofessionell gestaltet sind. Zugegeben, Webdesign spielt im Hong Konger Geschäftsalltag keine wichtige Rolle, dennoch sind gerade Websites der Hauptbestandteil von Hong Kongs globaler Medienpräsenz -- häufig das einzige, was man im Ausland von Hong Kongs Medienlandschaft zu sehen bekommt. Ich finde es da ein bischen zu kurz gesprungen, daß die meisten Unternehmen hier auf international wettbewerbsfähige Websites einfach so verzichten.

Naja, das Treffen war sehr nett, und ich werde schätzungsweise versuchen, den Kontakt zu P.K. und TnC aufrechtzuerhalten für mögliche gemeinsame Synergien.

On this sunny weekend we visited Hong Kong Disneyland, and it turned out to be a very nice day. Disneyland here is not overly spacious, but there are enough things to keep you busy for a long afternoon.

Am gestrigen, reichlich sonnigen Sonntag ging es ins Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, wo wir einen entspannten Tag verbracht haben. Hong Kong Disney ist nicht übermäßig groß, aber es gibt doch genug Attraktionen für einen verlängerten Nachmittag.

My highlights: at the Astro-Blaster (a kind of futuristic haunted house where you are supposed to blast around like mad with a laserpointer-gun) I gained a score of 23.300, an upper mid-fielder highscore-wise. And they've got... talking, singing trash-containers, cruising around the place.
But while taking a shot together with Buzz Lightyear, he bend me into pose so cricked, that I might better visit a physician within the next few days. This is probably the only fun those guys get out of their occupation, having to wear an 80-pounds plastic-suit for the whole day when it's 30 degrees outside.
Anyway, design and implementation of such amusement-park seems to be a quite interesting work.

Meine Highlights: im Astro-Blaster (eine Geisterbahn, in der man seine Treffsicherheit mit Laserpointer-Pistolen beweisen kann) habe ich es auf 23.300 Punkte gebracht, immerhin ein Highscore im oberen Mittelfeld. Und sie haben... sprechende, singende Mülleimer, die in der Gegend herumfahren...
Bei einem gemeinsamen Foto mit Buzz Lightyear hat mich dieser allerdings so in Pose gebogen, daß ich den nächsten Tagen besser einen Chiropraktiker aufsuche. Vermutlich ist das das einzige Vergnügen, daß die Jungs ihrem Job gelegentlich abgewinnen können, wenn sie den ganzen Tag bei 30 Grad im Schatten in einem 80-Pfund Plastik-Kostüm herumlaufen.
Konzeption und Aufbau solcher Vergnügungsparks ist sicherlich eine spannende Sache...

Meanwhile I'm already in Hong Kong for a full week, having built up my home-office. More or less--since my network-provider here (Netvigator) seems to be unable to deliver my emails through SMTP. They basically only allow POP-mails to be sent through their own SMTP-servers, which obviously have all their ports nailed shut (or this is some kind of compatibility-problem with T-Bird, dunno...)--seriously annoying.

Woche Eins
Mittlerweile bin ich schon wieder eine Woche in Hong Kong. Mein Home-Office habe ich eingerichtet, allerdings habe ich meinen aktuellen Netzanbieter Netvigator nicht dazu bringen können, Mails per SMTP zu verschicken (die verschicken Mails grundsätzlich nur über ihren eigenen SMTP-Server, aber alle Ports sind da komplett zugenagelt; oder es gibt irgendeine Art von Inkompatibilität mit T-Bird) -- ärgerlich.

My favorite leisure-time activities were dining-out at Peking Road One and at the Khyber Pass Mess Club in Chungqing Mansion. Peking Road One offers a truely breathtaking view over the harbor, the restaurant being on the 10th floor.
Infamous Chungqing-Mansion is the exact opposite then. I only had a vague idea about it, having read quite a lot of horror-stories about it on the internet. While pushing and shoving your way through the ground-floor to reach the elevator, you got to fend off half a dozen of turban-wearing indian gentlemen, trying to sell whatnot, crazy. At the elevator you wait in a long queue of visitors, being dispatched to the upper floors by another indian (or pakistani?) operator in cord-trousers and round-rimmed glasses--to the 7th floor in our case. Khyber Pass Mess Club proves to be a mixture of East-Germany-chic, infantry-foxhole and camping-place cloaca on an estimated 600 sq-feet. I guess in Germany it would take the authorities some 2.53 secs to shut down such place.
Their curry ist great, granted, but the boys really to polish their manners and their service.

Oh, and I went to the movies for two times already;the Perfume (ohmygod) and the surprisingly funny Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum.

Zu meinen Freizeit-Highlights der letzten Woche gehörten ein Besuch in einem der Restaurants in Peking Road One und im Khyber Pass Mess Club in der Chungqing Mansion. Von der Peking Road aus hat man einen überwältigenden Ausblick auf den Hafen, das Restaurant ist im 10. Stock.
Die berühmt-berüchtigte Chungqing-Mansion ist dann das echte Kontrastprogramm, ich hatte nur eine vage Vorstellung durch diverse Horrorstories, die ich bereits im Internet gelesen hatte; während man sich durch das Erdgeschoss zum Aufzug vorarbeitet, wird man von einem halben Dutzend Turban-bewährter indischer Herren belagert, die einem alles Mögliche andrehen möchten, wirklich irre. Am Aufzug wartet man dann in einer langen Schlange, bis man vom indischen (oder pakistanischen?) Operator mit Nickelbrille und Kordhose in 7-Personen-Häppchen in eine der oberen Etagen geschaufelt wird -- in diesem Fall die 7. Etage. Der Khyber Pass Mess Club ist auf geschätzten 20 Quadratmetern eine Mischung aus DDR-Wohncharme, Infanterie-Unterstand und Camping-Platz-Kloake. Ich schätze in Deutschland würde es etwa 2.53 Sekunden dauern, bis der Laden vom Ordnungsamt dicht gemacht werden würde.
Das Curry ist schon wirklich klasse, aber die Jungs müssen echt an ihren Manieren und ihrem Service arbeiten.

Oh, und ich war zweimal im Kino; das Parfüm (ächz) und (überraschend witzig) Ben Stiller in Night at the Museum.

Ngho daih sei chi leih hèung góng. Tomorrow morning I will take my flight to Hong Kong. This time I'm going to stay for the next three months, living in Jordan, at Canton Road. Like in the last years, this is not going to be a three-months long vacation--I've got my customers' and my private projects packed for the road.

What's wrong with Del.icio.us?

Doesn't anybody took notice on Del.icio.us newest glitch? It occurred to me since last week that Del.icio.us dropped its feature of displaying how many users have bookmarked a given page (on purpose?). This badge now only appears on their "most popular"-pages, on users' top-level-pages, and it reappears after you've signed in. You don't get to see it on tagged pages otherwise (gaaayyy!). What's more annoying, several bookmarks reappeared which I had deleted already several months ago (annoooying!). Those recurrences vanish again after signing in, making it impossible to delete them alltogether.

Was läuft falsch bei Del.icio.us?
Wenn niemand über den neuesten Del.icio.us-Glitch bloggen möchte, dann muss ich das wohl machen; seit ein paar Tagen hat Del.icio.us (absichtlich?) die Funktion abgeschaltet, die anzeigt, wieviele User eine bestimmte Seite gebookmarkt haben. Dieses Feature kann man nun nur noch auf der obersten Verzeichnisebene und auf den "Most Popular"-Seiten sehen, und nachdem man sich eingeloggt hat -- nicht aber auf den regulären, unteren Tag-Seiten (albern!). Ausserdem sind in meiner Bookmarkliste Einträge wieder aufgetaucht, die ich schon vor Monaten gelöscht hatte (ärgerlich!). Besser noch: diese Geistereinträge sind nur im öffentlichen Bereich sichtbar und verschwinden, sobald ich mich einlogge -- es ist unmöglich, sie endgültig zu löschen.

So is this a server-hiccup or a bug or maybe even a feature? Any ideas, anybody? I don't find any further explanations in the blogosphere.

I'm not quite happy with Del.icio.us for quite a while now. I would gladly switch to somewhere else if there'd be any bookmark-app providing some decent, basic features like sorting my bookmarks properly. Sigh... you got to catch up on everything yourself... ;)

Ist das nun ein Schluckauf oder ein Fehler? Weiß jemand mehr darüber? Im Netz finde ich jedenfalls keine Einträge zu diesem Thema.

Ich bin schon seit einiger Zeit nicht mehr so richtig glücklich mit Del.icio.us. Ich würde sofort wechseln, wenn es einen Anbieter gäbe, der ein paar vernünftige Features bietet, z.B. daß man seine Bookmarks sortieren kann. Seufz, alles muss man selber machen... ;)

Die Betaversion von Photoshop CS3 war die erste neue Software, die ich im neuen Jahr ausprobiert habe -- Adobe hatte den Download vor ein paar Wochen veröffentlicht, und es kursieren bereits eine Menge ausführlicher Berichte darüber im Netz -- hier also meine ganz persönlichen, subjektiven 2 Cents darüber...

While installing, components of CS3 try to connect to the internet, Adobe Bonjour amongst others. Bonjour is Apple's Bonjour licensed by Adobe (aka known as Apple Rendezvous but being renamed after a copyright-lawsuit), and it's (supposingly) used to keep contact with Adobe's Version Cue servers.
Upon finishing the installation process, CS3 associates itself with the .psd-filetype, as expected. I reversed this, as I'm currently not switching to the new Photoshop-beta-version.

Subjectively speaking, CS3 boots a bit faster than previous Photoshop-versions. Thanks to a change in font-management, or so I'm guessing, as you're experiencing some additional idle seconds after activating the font-menu for the first time.

Palettes (like the font-palette) are now residing in the upper right corner, next to the Navigator, as a kind of "fold-out"-buttons. Not too bad. Layer Comps and Tool Presets (which I've scarcely used at all) have been moved there, too.
The GUI got a dose of shine-up, but didn't changed too much. For example, you can choose between a single- and a double-column layout for the tool-palette. Luckily, the shortcuts also work like usual.

So, what's new in CS3 at all? There is a new Lasso Tool which higlights area with a painting movement of the mouse-cursor--a mixture of the Lasso- and the Brush-Tool. Photoshop's hardware-management aand Adobe Bridge were pepped up too, their look-and-feel being nudged gently towards Adobe Lightbox. That's more or less it. Doesn't appear as much, but obviously a lot of changes were going on under the hood; CS3 is the first Photoshop being available as a native Universal Binary for Mac OS X. I guess this step was more important to Adobe than propping more fancy tools under Photoshop's belt.

Personally, I was hoping to see more of a cross-over with Fireworks but Adobe seems to be heading into the opposite direction with Photoshop. Its consolidation with Lightbox seems to indicate a movement towards a tool for photographers and image-compositing, rather than for web-development.

Oh, and then there is the issue left with those ugly icons: Adobe went for a kind of acronym-approach for their newest product-rebrush--which were instantly mistaken as a kind of temporary placeholders. Well, those icons are here to stay, the only exceptions are Acrobat-products and Apollo for example. In my humble opinion this solution is counter-intuitive (e.g. what is "Rh", "Jr", "Fb" or "Gl" supposed to mean, eh? Any ideas?) and quite shopworn. I can't remember how many examples of such Table of Elements-approach I've already seen.
By the way, at InsanelyMac you can find an icon replacement, basically a new color-coded CS2-icon--nice!

Während der Installation greift CS3 zweimal auf das Internet zu, u.a. durch Adobe Bonjour -- übrigens dasselbe wie Apples Bonjour-Technologie (vormals Apple Rendeszvous und nach einem Markenstreit umbenannt), angeblich um mit Adobes Version Cue Servern Kontakt aufzunehmen.
Nach der Installation reißt CS3 automatisch den Dateityp .psd an sich, wie erwartet. Das lässt sich mit 2 Klicks beheben, wenn man noch dauerhaft mit einer älteren Photoshop-Version arbeiten möchte.

CS3 fährt subjektiv ein wenig schneller hoch. Ich vermute, daß dies durch ein verändertes Fontmanagement erreicht wurde, denn man muss nun nochmal einige Sekunden warten, wenn man zum ersten Mal das Fontdropdown öffnet.

Paletten, wie z.B. die für Schriften, befinden sich nun ein- und ausklappbar in einer kleinen Werkzeugleiste neben dem Navigator oben rechts, gar nicht schlecht eigentlich. Layer Comps und Tool Presets (die ich selber noch nie benutzt habe), sind auch dorthin gewandert.
Das GUI ist ansonsten ein wenig aufpoliert worden, hat sich aber funktional nur wenig verändert. So lässt sich z.B. nun auswählen, ob die Werkzeugleiste ein ein- oder zweispaltiges Layout haben soll. Glücklicherweise sind die Shortcuts erhalten geblieben.

Was gibt es nun eigentlich Neues in CS3? Zunächst mal ein neues Zauberstab-Werkzeug, das Farbbereiche mit Malbewegungen auswählt -- eine Mischung aus Lasso und Pinsel. Und das Gerätemanagement und Adobe Bridge wurden in ihrem Look and Feel und Funktionalität stärker an Adobe Lightbox angepasst. Das sieht erstmal nicht nach viel aus, die meisten Änderungen wurden wohl unter der Haube vorgenommen. So ist CS3 auch nativ für Mac OS X erhältlich. Ich vermute, daß die Umstellung auf Unsiversal Binary für Adobe z.Zt. wichtiger war, als eine Menge neuer Werkzeuge zu implementieren.

Ich hatte insgeheim die Hoffnung, daß die Funktionen von Photoshop und Fireworks stärker verknüpft werden, Adobe scheint mit CS3 Photoshop jedoch eher in Richtung Lightbox zu rücken -- hin zu einem Tool für Fotografie und Bildbearbeitung, statt zu einem Webentwicklungstool.

Ach ja, und dann ist da noch die Sache mit den hässlichen Icons: Für ihren neuen Product-Rebrush haben Adobe sich zu einer Akronym-artigen Lösung entschieden, die die meisten User zuerst für Platzhalter hielten. Ausnahmen mit einem echten Icon sind z.B. Acrobat und Apollo.
Meine bescheidene Meinung: die neuen Icons halte ich für unintuitiv (na, wer weiß wofür "Rh", "Jr", "Fb" oder "Gl" stehen?) und reichlich abgelutscht. Ordnungssysteme, die einem Periodensystem ähneln, hat es nun wirklich schon oft genug gegeben.
Bei InsanelyMac hat man sich mal die Mühe gemacht, ein Ersatzicon aus einem farblich angepassten CS2 Icon zu basteln -- sehr nett.

Besonders die Nachrichten der letzten Monate über Facebook stärkten bei mir den Gedanken, daß der Community-Markt sich langsam heißläuft. Es gab immer wieder Gerüchte über eine Übernahme durch Yahoo -- im Dezember konnte man dann lesen, daß Yahoo 1 Milliarde US$ für Facebook geboten hatten, und bereit waren, bis auf 1.63 Mrd. hochzugehen. Allerdings lehnte das Facebook-Team ab. CEO Mark Zuckerberg und Peter Thiel sprachen von einer Hausnummer von 8 Mrd...

Eight billion, are you kidding me? Compared to another merger: at the end of December, Lufthansa and KarstadtQuelle got an agreement to sell the travel-group Thomas Cook to KarstadtQuelle--for around EUR 800 million. Thomas Cook generates some EUR 7.7 billion per year with their 23.300 employees and 80 aircrafts. This puts prices for YouTube and Facebook into another light for me. I'm wondering how Facebook will get as profitable, if their users are already going hyperbolic about things as tiny as a news-feed.

A little bit more realistic, but still oversized, are purchases of german communities: StudiVZ, a Facebook-clone (with all their recent homegrown problems), was sold for EUR 85 million yesterday to Holtzbrink. OpenBC, who rebranded themselves as "Xing" in the past months, cashed in EUR 35 million after they went public (the were hoping for a triple-digit million initially).

"Social Network Fatigue" is already a meme of the past weeks--disappointed users turning their backs on the big players like MySpace and Facebook. Apophenia posted some interesting thoughts on the topic, I couldn't agree more: teens will still want to hang around with their friends, but the face of networking might change slightly. I already posted on this blog, that IMO networks will nudge towards smaller, localized, more relevant versions in the coming years.

I will go on working on this field myself, having 2 projects up my sleeves which I hope to launch by the end of this year. So, back to work... :)

Spaß beiseite, 8 Milliarden? Nur zum Vergleich: Ende Dezember haben sich Lufthansa und KarstadtQuelle darauf geeinigt, den Reiseanbieter Thomas Cook an KarstadtQuelle zu verkaufen -- für 800 Millionen Euro. Thomas Cook generiert 7.7 Milliarden Euro pro Jahr mit seinen 23.300 Angestellten und 80 Fliegern. Solche Zahlen rücken die Preisschilder von YouTube und Facebook für mich in ein anderes Licht. Ich frage mich jedenfalls, wie Facebook so profitabel werden wollen, wenn ihre Mitglieder bereits bei den kleinsten Änderungen an der Website Amok laufen (z.B. in Sachen News Feeds).

Schon realistischer, aber immer noch aufgebläht, sind für mich die Kaufpreise, die in Deutschland kürzlich für Communities gezahlt wurden: StudiVZ, der deutsche Facebook-Klon (mit all seinen hausgemachten Problemen) ist gestern für 85 Millionen Euro an den Holtzbrink-Verlag verkauft worden. OpenBC, die ihr Re-Branding zu "Xing" in den vergangenen Monaten abgeschlossen haben, konnten bei ihrem Börsengang immerhin 35 Millionen Euro erzielen (sie hatten ursprünglich eine dreistellinge Millionenhöhe angepeilt).

"Social Network Fatigue" ist eines der Memes der letzten Wochen gewesen -- der Verdruß und die Abkehr der User von den großen Communities wie MySpace und Facebook. Apophenia hat ein paar interessante Gedanken zu diesem Thema, denen ich mich voll anschließe: mit seinen Freunden Kontakt zu halten, wird nicht aus der Mode kommen. Aber die Form des Netzwerkelns mag sich in den kommenden Jahren ändern. Meiner Ansicht nach (die ich ja bereits hier und da auf diesem Blog vertreten habe) wird es eine Bewegung hin zu kleineren, relevanteren, lokaleren Netzwerken geben.

Auf diesem Feld werde ich mich auch weiterhin tummeln. Ich habe z.Zt. noch zwei Projekte in der Pipeline, die ich gerne bis spätestens Ende dieses Jahres veröffentlichen möchte -- also, wieder an die Arbeit... ;)

Frohes Neues
Das war also das Jahr 2006. Ich finde, mal wieder ein ereignisreiches Jahr. Eine Menge Neugründungen gingen an den Start und haben sich zum Teil auch wieder eingefaltet -- mein eigener bescheidener Beitrag: das Blog Techcrush, das Yves und ich für einige Monate betrieben und vor ein paar Wochen wieder eingestellt haben.

Techcrush was a brainchild of Stowe Boyd who initiated the idea of revisiting web-startups debuting on Techcrunch. I still see Stowe's idea as a valuable contribution to the blogosphere (and at least some readers also saw it like that, again, thanks folks)--but after some 4 months of blogging, I had to shrug acknowledgement of a too high workload for Techcrush. Or as Yves put it: "It's relatively easy for Michael Arrington to report new stuff. There is not too much to say anyway, eventually about the usual suspects. At least the workload is not comparable to Techcrush. For Techcrush to work properly, you need to keep an eye on every start-up and its media-buzz for months, and gather insider-information, to create enough journalistic substance..."
At least we build something extremely quick (time to market was one week or so), and I honed my skills in tweaking Wordpress.

We closed down our Sinnflut-office at Merkurstr. at the end of December--to me it made no sense (at the moment) to keep an office in Germany while I'm trying to build up my business in Hong Kong. We founded our Limited there last year, and the show will be going on in 2007. I'm back to Hong Kong in February again for some 3 months to make more headway in my web 2.0 services.

What else was important to me in 2006, internet-wise? All the hype and vc revolving around communities. MySpace, for example, is now officially the most visited website. In "July 2004 myspace.com represented only .1% of all Internet visits... With the week ending July 8, 2006 market share figure of 4.5% of all the US Internet visits." (Hitwise) The growth BTW is declining a bit since its peak in July.
The term "MySpace" drove the most traffic to all sites as the top-search-term, putting "eBay" and "Yahoo" on 3rd and 4th place.

Google bought YouTube last year for a whopping US$ 1.65 billion. 1.73 billion videos have been viewed on youTube ever since, from their 45 terabytes of videos. Right after the acquisition, Google faced a wave of law-suits on copyright infringements. They came to a deal with Time Warner and Sony BMG in the meantime, and still keep a copyright fund of several hundreds of millions. Maybe the reason why they changed their AdSense-program in February already, seizing revenues if the figures can't reach the threshold of US$ 100 in a certain limit of time.

Die Idee zu Techcrush stammte ursprünglich von Stowe Boyd, der anregte, den Werdegang von Startups zu analysieren, die von Techcrunch und Konsorten vorgestellt wurden. Ich halte Stowes Idee wirklich für einen nützlichen Beitrag zur Blogosphäre (und zumindest einige Leser sahen das wohl genauso, nochmal danke an alle) -- nach 4 Monaten des Rezensierens musste ich mir jedoch eingestehen, daß ich den Arbeitsaufwand für Techcrush nicht bewältigen kann. Yves hat es folgendermaßen ausgedrückt: "Für Michael Arrington ist es relativ easy über etwas Neues zu berichten. Es gibt wenig zu erzählen, vielleicht sind es übliche Verdächtige, Copycats etc. Der Rechercheaufwand ist im Vergleich zu dem, was für Techcrush nötig wäre, gering... Für Techcrush müsste man jedes Startup über Monate hinweg beobachten, die Presse und Blogosphäre beobachten, das Umfeld betrachten, an Insiderinformationen kommen und dann ein mega-ausgefuchster Journalist sein, um ausreichende Substanz zu schaffen..."
Immerhin haben wir innerhalb von kürzester Zeit etwas auf die Beine gestellt (wir haben etwa eine Woche Entwicklungszeit benötigt) und ich habe ein paar zusätzliche Erfahrungen beim Tweaken von Wordpress gemacht.

Wir haben unser Sinnflut-Büro in der Merkurstraße Ende Dezember aufgelöst -- für mich macht es (im Moment) mit meinen Geschäftsplänen in Hong Kong keinen Sinn, in Deutschland weiterhin ein Büro zu unterhalten. Die Firmengründung in Hong Kong haben wir im letzten Jahr eingefädelt, in diesem Jahr soll es weiter gehen. Ich bin jedenfalls in 4 Wochen wieder in Hong Kong (bis Anfang Mai) und werde dort an meinen Projekten im Bereich Web 2.0 weiterbasteln.

Was ist mir ansonsten in Sachen Internet im Jahr 2006 am stärksten in Erinnerung geblieben? Die geballte Ladung Hype und Risikokapital im Bereich Communities. MySpace ist seit Juli zur meistbesuchten Website gekrönt worden (wenn man Hitwise glauben darf). Im Jahr 2004 hatten 0.1 Prozent aller Besuche im amerikanischen Internet MySpace als Ziel. Mitte letzten Jahres hatte sich diese Zahl auf beeindruckende 4.5% gesteigert (die stetig wachsende Kurve der Besucher hat übrigens seit Juli 2006 eine kleine Delle). Der Begriff "MySpace" beförderte den größten Traffic zu allen anderen Sites (noch vor "eBay" und "Yahoo").

Google hat im vergangenen Jahr YouTube, die größte Video-Community, geschluckt -- für satte 1.65 Milliarden US-Dollar. Zwischenzeitlich wurden 1.73 Milliarden Videos auf YouTube angeschaut, von den 45 Terabyte an Webfilmen, die bislang hochgeladen wurden.
Google sah sich diversen Copyright-Klagen wegen gerippter Inhalte auf YouTube gegenüber. Sie haben sich zügig mit Time Warner und Sony BMG geeinigt und zudem eine Kriegskasse von mehreren hundert Millionen Dollar für weitere Klagen zurückgehalten. Vielleicht war das ja der Grund, warum Google bereits im Februar eine drastische Änderung in ihrem AdSense-Programm einführten -- schafft man es als Anbieter nicht, innerhalb eines bestimmten Zeitraumes Werbeeinnahmen von über 100 Dollar zu erzielen, wird dieser Betrag von Google einbehalten.

Xing going public

German networking service ~~OpenBC~~ Xing is going public and expects a three figure million revenue. Kudos, they will need this money under their belts for some likely lawsuits from Friendster, if the announced aggressive international rollout is about to come--several parts of Xing's website run afoul the Friendster-patent, for example its search-function, the invitation-system and displaying the path of connection between two given members.
I lately read somewhere that Xing will be the new LinkedIn-killer in the USA. Frankly, Open Business Club AG should first start to develop some peculiar USPs instead of copying LinkedIn's user-interface...

Xing geht an die Börse
Die deutsche Netzwerkler-Plattform ~~OpenBC~~ Xing geht an die Börse und erhofft sich einen 3-stelligen Millionenerlös. Viel Glück, den werden sie vermutlich auch für etwaige Patentklagen von Friendster benötigen, wenn die angekündigte aggressive internationale Markteinführung kommt -- diverse Teilbereiche der Website wären davon betroffen, u.a. die Suchfunktion, das Einladungssystem und die Anzeige des Pfades von Kontakten zwischen zwei Teilnehmern.
Ich habe neulich die Meinung gelesen, daß Xing in den USA der neue LinkedIn-Killer sein wird. Vielleicht sollte die Open Business Club AG dafür zunächst mal anfangen, innovative eigene Alleinstellungsmerkmale zu entwickeln, statt das User-Interface von LinkedIn zu kopieren...

Akamai and JupiterResearch recently published a research-paper lately, identifying "'4 Seconds' as the New Threshold of Acceptability for Retail Web Page Response Times".

"Four seconds is the maximum length of time an average online shopper will wait for a Web page to load before potentially abandoning a retail site. This is one of several key findings revealed in a report made available today by Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), commissioned through JupiterResearch, that examines consumer reaction to a poor online shopping experience." (Akamai)

Die Fünf scheidet völlig aus
Akamai und JupiterResearch haben vor ein paar Tagen eine Analyse veröffentlicht, in der sie herausstreichen, daß 4 Sekunden die maximal akzeptierte Ladezeit für Benutzer eines Online-Shops sind.

While I don't see it noteworthy that especially a business like Akamai would come to this finding, it still supports one of my Memes: websites have to be designed for rather short attention-spans, limiting their visual representation to just a handful of features. Andreas once pointed me to the fact, that probalby the most-used button on the world wide web is the "skip"-button for flash-intros--no small wonder, eh?

Na gut, es verwundert nicht, daß gerade ein Unternehmen wie Akamai zu dieser Feststellung gelangt. Trotzdem sehe ich mich in einem meiner Themenfelder bestätigt: Webseiten müssen für extrem kurze Aufmerksamkeitsspannen gestaltet und auf eine Handvoll von visuellen Reizen beschränkt werden. Baidu, loosing it

Not an overly good week for Baidu, China's search-engine no 1. As China Web 2.0 Review reported, Baidu lost its supposed yellow-pages search-deal with China Telecom to Microsoft. To add insult to injury, their long-rumoured click-fraud-inflated clickthrough-rates finally ended in a law suit. Fons Tuinstra at China Herald cites that Baidu will be sued by Beijing-based Analysys International.

Das war keine gute Woche Baidu, Chinas Nummer Eins der Suchmaschinen. Nach einem Posting von China Web 2.0 Review hat Baidu den Deal mit China Telecom für den Yellow-Pages-Service 114 an Microsoft verloren. Ausserdem Baidus Clickthrough-Raten, die schon seit längerer Zeit nach Gerüchten durch Clickfraud verzerrt sein sollen, nun zu rechtlichen Maßnahmen geführt: Baidu wird verklagt von Analysys International aus Beijing, so zitiert Fons Tuinstra in seinem Blog China Herald.

Techcrush, Yves' and my new blog, is up and running for about a week now. Well, Yves does the admin-stuff, while I'm doing the posting. Shortly after we went online, I found a comment by Michael Arrington from Techcrunch at Tony Hung's blog Deepjiveinterest, on a possible trademark-violation. I contacted Michael immediately, to talk things over, and stopped blogging in the meantime. Then the blogosphere went hyperbolic.

Schöne Bescherung
Techcrush, Yves und mein neues Blog, läuft nun seit etwas anderthalb Wochen -- na gut, Yves gibt den Admin und ich habe bislang die Artikel geschrieben. Kurz nach dem Launch fand ich einen Kommentar von Michael Arrington von Techrunch auf Tony Hungs Blog Deepjiveinterests, über einen möglichen Trademarkkonflikt. Ich habe daraufhin Micheal kontaktiert, und das Bloggen erstmal eingestellt, um die Dinge zu klären. Daraufhin schäumte die Blogosphäre über.

Valleywag even wrote about a cease&desist-letter we supposingly received from Techcrunch. In fact, Michael and us resolved the matter quick and amiable. It took several days to follow-up on every discussions and shed a proper light on the affair. Michael Arrington posted on the matter on Crunchnotes.
While being a discomforting situation to me, the positive side was that Techcrush received a lot of conversations and reach. We had around 2500-3000 pagehits in the first few days. This was called a brilliant marketing-move by some bloggers. The truth is more like everything was happening quite accidentally.
The hype is fading out now, and I can go back to my regular duties, defcon green.

Valleywag behauptete sogar, wir hätten eine Cease & Desist-Forderung von Techcrunch erhalten. Ganz im Gegenteil haben Michael und wir uns aber sehr zügig und gütig geeinigt. Ich habe einige Tage damit zugebracht, die Sache auf diversen Blogs klarzustellen, und auch Michael Arrington hat auf Crunchnotes ausführlich darüber berichtet.
Die, für mich etwas unangenehme, Angelegenheit hatte aber als positive Auswirkung, daß Techcrush eine Menge Aufmerksamkeit erhalten hat. Wir hatten etwa 2500-3000 Zugriffe in den ersten Tagen. Von einigen Bloggern wurde dies als brillianter Marketingschachzug bezeichnet; so gerne ich mir diesen Schuh anziehen würde, ist die Entwicklung doch eher unvorhersehbar und ein Zufallsprodukt gewesen.
Die Wogen haben sich mittlerweile geglättet, und ich kann mich wieder entspannter meiner Arbeit widmen.

Techcrush about to launch

Google's bumpers outside USA

Google faces some homegrown problems in Germany and China at the moment. China Web 2.0 Review has an insightful article on Google's relatively troubled footing in China's search-engine-market: some 25 percent, compared to Baidu's fat 62 percent. Additionally, Baidu could secure a new deal lately with China Telecom on 114, a new Yellow-Pages-Service.
In Germany, Google still fights a trademark-battle against a small german business, owning the trademark G-Mail in Germany for longer years already.

Cultural preferences on how to run a business properly just couldn't be translated so easily into a foreign market, right?

Google tut sich im Moment ein wenig schwer in Deutschland und China. China Web 2.0 Review hat einen sehr interessanten Artikel über den relativ geringen Marktanteil von Google-China im chinesischen Suchaschinenmarkt. Runde 25 Prozent, gegenüber den satten 62 Prozent von Baidu. Baidu konnte sich zusätzlich einen wichtigen Deal mit China Telecom für 114, eine Art Gelbe-Seiten-Service, sichern.
In Deutschland kämpft Google immer noch einen Markenstreit wegen seines G-Mail-Services -- in Deutschland bereits seit längerer Zeit ein eingetragenes Markenzeichen eines kleinen deutschen Unternehmens.

Da zeigt sich mal wieder für mich, daß sich eine kulturelle Prägung, wie ein Geschäft zu führen ist, nicht einfach so in einen ausländischen Markt übetragen lässt.

You will have noticed I fell a bit silent lately--I don't have much time for blogging these days. I'm working hard on a private project which will hopefully see daylight at the start of next month.
Two recent links: did you already know Seth Godin's Web 2.0 Traffic Watch List? Rank 1 to 3 is MySpace, eBay and YouTube at the moment. Oh, and CrazyEgg went live--maybe you already read it on Mashable or Agenturblog. I left them my email-address and even took the time to take part in a poll; but I ended up getting no notice that they were going online--I wonder why I even care to waste my effort, chucks... BTW: the site is already down gain with a notice "unscrambling some eggs..."

Ihr werdet festgestellt haben, daß es in meinem Blog in der letzten Zeit nichts Neues zu lesen gab -- ich habe im Moment nicht genug Zeit zum Bloggen. Ich arbeite hart an einem privaten Webprojekt, das hoffentlich Anfang nächsten Monats fertig wird.

The Iconfactory is being revamped! Today they are already showing part 2 of their funny Quicktime-Animation, more seems to follow throughout the week. Obviously they are working on a more standards-compliant site, running on Rails (check out the source-code!).
Iconfactory is one of my favorite destinations--ok, I'm bribed about this, cause I (shameless sef-promotion follows) ever won a design-prize at their icon-contest Pixelpalooza...

Iconfactory bekommt ein Redesign! Heute läuft bereits der zweite Teil der witzig gemachten Quicktime-Animationen -- der Rest wird dann wohl während der nächste Tage gezeigt. Offensichtlich bastelt das Iconfactory-Team an einer Webstandards-gerechteren Site, die auf Rails laufen wird (schaut mal in den Source-Code!).

CMS: die Waffe der Wahl
IBM-Entwickler haben letzte Woche einen Artikel online gestellt mit dem Titel "Using open source software to design, develop, and deploy a collaborative Web site". Während ich den Titel aus beruflichen Gründen interessant fand, entpuppte sich der Artikel dann als detaillierter Überblick über diverse Content-Management-Systeme.

So Drupal is IBM's recommendation--they follow up with some details in deploying Drupal.
Very interesting reading to me. Some weeks ago, my friend Sascha in Hong Kong ever asked me on my opinion on how the internet is going to evolve in the next 5 years: We will see much more use of Content-Management- and Blogging-Engines--and new web-based solutions like Google's pagemaker and Microsoft's Office Live. I guess the "classic" job of programming websites will loose more and more ground over the next years. Knowing more about CMS will likewise get more important.

Drupal ist also IBMs Empfehlung, die Autoren beschreiben dann Details über den Einsatz von Drupal. Sehr interessant. Vor einigen Wochen hat mein Freund Sascha in Hong Kong mich gefragt, wie meiner Meinung nach das Internet in 5 Jahren aussehen wird: wir werden wohl in noch größerem Umfang den Einsatz von Content-Management- und Blogging-Engines sehen, wie auch webbasierte Lösungen wie Googles Webeditor und Microsoft Office Live. Die "klassische" Arbeit, Websites für Kunden zu gestalten und zu programmieren wird über die nächsten Jahre mehr und mehr an Bedeutung verlieren, während Know-How im Bereich CMS immer wichtiger werden wird.

Jaja, ihr habt schon über das neue Friendster-Patent gehört. Aber die meisten Blogs haben das Patent nur als News kurz angerissen und die (albernen) Details ausgelassen. Aus beruflichem Interesse habe ich mir Friendsters Ansprüche angeschaut, kann also auch gleich eine Zusammenfassung schreiben.

Let me say it right away: Software patents are evil, mostly just being claimed to reap the benefits of your competition, instead of protecting real intellectual property. I find the claims of Friendster an utter example of this practise, but check it our yourself:

First of all, the patent was filed in 2003 already, mentioned here and here. At that time, LinkedIn had bought the "Six Degress Patent" in an auction for 700 Grand from Youthstream (who had bought it from Sixdegrees.com) -- both Youthstream and Sixdegress became extint later on.
U.S. Patent officers decided that the Six-Degrees-Patent and Friendster's claims do not overlap. The key point should be that LinkedIn's patent claims a technical infrastructure suitable to run a social network, whereas Friendster's patent is much more general and claims typical user-actions in such network--too bad for LinkedIn and OpenBC. I guess, legal action is own its way there.

What exactly is claimed by Friendster?
Duncan Watts' "Small-World"-theory serves as a theoretical background for Friendster's "invention"--you might have heard about the theory of everything is connected with each other in up to 6 steps of separation (maybe I'll post an abstract on this later). Friendster's "invention" is a technical implementation of this, downward to the most generic user-actions.

The search-pattern is now patented, where you take given users A and B and check on their relationship: starting with B's contacts and tracking back to A with subsequently smaller sets of contacts. An algorithm which is well-known e.g. in the gaming-industry for years and years, being called "Double-A-Star". Part of the patent-claim is a given "distance" from A to B, decideable by A when searching for B (for example "only search for people who are 6 steps away from you"). Also if the search-distance is fixed to three levels of separation; now this really reeks to me like a blow on LinkedIn.
Part of this claim is also searching for descriptive tags like interests and occupation.

Also patented is the display and/or storing of this "path of connections" with a short profile of all intermediate members, including a hyperlink to their full profile. Also jumping into such profile and requesting contact or an introduction.

Friendster also "invented" Email-invitations to friends (sic!), where user A sends out invitations to join the network to B and C via email; patented is furthermore the action of receiving a positive feedback if user B or C accept and then marking A, B and C as friends.

Endorsements, too, are part of this patent, including B writing an endorsement on A, with A having the opportunity to either accept the comment or declining it.

Last but not least: server infrastructure is being described, splitting it up in mail-, database- and image-servers and so on.

That sums it up. Now tell me, which patent-officer was sleeping when accepting these claims? To me, none of these are inventions never in use in any community-site before 2003 -- shame on you Friendster. How do you think about this?

I also found a patent-application from Friendster, which is still pending. This one is about uploading of content into a community-network from user B in behalf of user A (like images and so on), with A being able to accept the upload or not. After successful uploading the data can be tagged by A.

Kurz vorweg: Für mich gehören Software Patente zum Bösen in der Welt. Sie sind nicht dazu da, geistiges Eigentum zu schützen, sondern um von den Einkünften der Konkurrenz zu leben. Das Friendster-Patent ist ein hervorragendes Beispiel für diese Praxis; aber lest selber:

Das Patent wurde bereits 2003 angemeldet, erwähnt z.B. hier und hier. Zu dieser Zeit hatte LinkedIn das "Six Degrees Patent" für 700.000 US$ ersteigert von Youthstream (die es wiederum von Sixdegrees.com gekauft hatten). Sowohl Youthstream als auch Sixdegrees sind mittlerweile von der Bildfläche verschwunden.
Nach der Entscheidung der US-Patent-Sachbearbeiter überschneiden sich die Patente von LinkedIn und Friendster nicht. Was vermutlich daran liegt, daß das Six-Degress-Patent lediglich die technische Infrastruktur beschreibt, die nötig ist, um ein Community-Network abzubilden, während das Friendster-Patent sehr viel genereller ist und typische Nutzer-Aktionen patentiert. Zu dumm für LinkedIn und OpenBC, da wird es wohl eher früher als später zu rechtlichen Schritten kommen.

Was wurde patentiert?
Duncan Watts "Small-World"-Theorie dient als theroretische Grundlage für die Friendster-"Erfindung" -- vielleicht habt ihr schon gehört von "alles ist mit allem anderen durch lediglich 6 Schritte verbunden" (ich schreibe vielleicht demnächst noch eine Zusammenfassung darüber). Friendsters "Erfindung" beschreibt die technische Umsetzung für soziale Netzwerke im Internet, bis hin zu den generischsten Bedienelementen.

So ist nun die Suche patentiert, die nach einer Verbindung zwischen den Nutzern A und B sucht, indem sie bei Bs Kontakten anfängt und sich dann, durch immer kleiner werdende Suchsets, zu A durcharbeitet. Der Algorithmus ist meines Wissen nach in der Spielindustrie bereits seit langen Jahren als "Double-A-Star"-Algorithmus bekannt. Teil des Patentes ist sowohl eine frei wählbare "Distanz" zwischen A und B (z.B. "Suche nach Personen, die 6 Schritte entfernt sind"), als auch eine feste Distanz von 3 Zwischenschritten. Also das sieht für mich wirklich stark nach einem Schlag in Richtung LinkedIn aus.
Auch ein Teil des Patentes ist es, das User beschreibende Tags über sich eingeben (z.B. Interessen und Berufe) und diese dann suchbar sind.

Zum Patent gehört ebenfalls, daß der "Verbindungsweg" zwischen A und B angezeigt und/oder gespeichert wird mit dem Kurzprofil der Mitglieder und einem Link, der zum vollen Profil führt -- auch das Anklicken eines Vollprofils und die Bitte um Kontakt oder Vorstellung.

Friendster hat auch die Email-Einladung "erfunden" (sic!), bei der User A seine Bekannten B und C per Email einlädt und eine positive Rückmeldung erhält, sobald sich diese im Netzwerk registriert haben. Dazu gehört auch, daß A, B und C dann als Freunde gekennzeichnet werden.

Auch Empfehlungen hat sich Friendster patentieren lassen, und zwar wenn User B einen Kommentar über User A schreibt, welcher die Empfehlung dann entweder annehmen oder ablehnen kann.

Und zu guter letzt: auch die Server-Infrastruktur wird im Patent beschrieben, namentlich die Aufteilung in Mail-, Datenbank- und Bildserver usw.

Das ist es im groben und ganzen. Jetzt möchte ich mal wissen, welcher Patent-Sachbearbeiter da geschlafen hat, als dieses Patent durchgegangen ist. Keine dieser angeblichen Erfindungen hat es nicht vor dem Jahr 2003 schon in irgendeiner Form gegeben -- Schämt euch, Friendster.

Ich habe noch eine weitere Patentanmeldung von Friendster gefunden, über die noch nicht entschieden wurde: dabei handelt es sich um Fileuploads in ein Community-Netzwerk durch User B für User A (z.B. Bilder) -- User kann dann entscheiden, ob er den Upload akzeptiert und mit Tags versehen will.

37Signals were blogging matters on their groupware Basecamp lately, and we were discussing this at the office in the last days. Reportedly, a lot of customers are requesting more and more powerful features to be integrated into Basecamp to accomodate their projects.
To me, 37Signals' response was not quite the proper answer.

In ihrem Blog haben 37Signals kürzlich über ihre Groupware Basecamp geschrieben, und wir haben über das Thema vor einigen Tagen bei uns im Büro diskutiert. Offensichtlich gibt es eine Menge Basecamp-Kunden, die sich mehr und mächtigere Features in Basecamp wünschen, um ihre Projekte besser abbilden und handeln zu können.

It's 37Signals' wellknown philosphy to create simple products (which became a real manifesto with their book "Get Real"), so their attitude on this matter is no surprise. While I fully agree that the majority of users really need SIMPLE solutions, I still don't quite agree on this matter. From my chinese friends I Iearned that turning down customers is something to be avoided, even if they are difficult and unnerving.

There are examples, where those Basecamp-customers are thinking up the most weird and elaborate hacks to bend Basecamp to their growing needs. Is "we can't be everything to everyone" the right answer to this situation? Are 37Signals clever or just stiff-necked? At least Basecamp's ROI would be lowered if 37Signals would have to recode the whole thing.

To me, a proper solution would be to make Basecamp more modular and flexible. In its core it could be as simple as it is, thus being a true 37Singals-application. But there could be plugins and addons which customers could use to personalize the software to their needs, following their own decisions.

By the way, Techcrunch reported on wizkid Ilija Studen lately, who conjured up a Basecamp-Clone on his own, making it open-source. Some opinion turned up in the comments-section that ActiveCollab will put 37Signals out of business. Far from true to me, running such things on your own server is too much hazzle for most people and no real threat to webbased groupware. Still, Jason Fried sounded a bit unnerved about this whole affair.

Keine Überraschung, schließlich ist es 37Signals Philisophie, einfache Weblösungen zu bauen (was mit ihrem Buch "Get Real" beinahe zu einem Manifest wurde). Ich finde diese Idee sehr richtig, da die Mehrzahl aller User wirklich EINFACHE Werkzeuge braucht. Allerdings geht für mich hier die Philisophie mit 37Signals durch. Von meinen chinesischen Freunden habe ich gelernt, daß man Kunden nicht abweisen sollte, auch wenn sie schwer zu ertragen sind.

Ich habe einige Beispiele von Basecamp-Kunden gelesen, die die Anwendung ausgeklügelt gehackt haben, um sie ihren wachsenden Anforderungen entsprechend zu verbiegen. Die Aussage Frieds "wir können es nicht jedem recht machen" kommt mir da deplaziert vor. Ist es clever von 37Signals an ihrer Strategie festzuhalten oder ist das auch ein bischen Halsstarrigkeit? 37Signals ROI aus Basecamp würde wohl durch eine aufwendige Umprogrammierung sinken.

Für mich wäre eine ausgewogene Lösung, wenn Basecamp modularer und flexibler würde. Die Kernanwendung könnte nach wie vor möglichst einfach und damit 37Signals Prinzipien treu bleiben. Hinzukommen könnten allerdings ein paar Plugins, mit denen Kunden die Funktionalität auf eigenen Wunsch stärker personalisieren könnten.

Übrigens hat Techcrunch neulich über den Wunderjunden Ilija Studen geschrieben, der einen Basecamp-Klon programmiert hat und als Open-Source-Lösung anbietet. Einige Kommentatoren vetreten die Meinung, daß ActiveCollab 37Signals gefährlich werden könnte. Die Gefahr besteht allerdings kaum, wenn die Mehrzahl der Kunden eine einfache "Out-of-the-box"-Lösung wollen, statt sich mit der umständlichen Installation auf dem eigenen Server herumzuärgern. Trotzdem hörte sich Jason Frieds Antwort zwischen den Zeilen ein wenig angenervt an.

Baidu is going social?

In the last days I read an article at Pete Cashmore's mashable.com about some new features at the chinese search-engine Baidu. Pete's posting missed some details, which I read about before at China Web 2.0 Review (I'm reading this blog very vigorously at the moment)--so I wrote a comment on mashable.com and pointed to that information.

Baidu macht auf sozial?
Ich fühle mich immer ein wenig angenervt, wenn ich irgendwo einen Kommentar poste und dieser dann grundlos gelöscht wird. In den letzten Tagen habe ich einen Artikel von Pete Cashmore in seinem Blog mashable.com über die chinesische Suchmaschine Baidu gelesen. In Petes Artikel fehlten einige Details, die ich kurz vorher bei China Web 2.0 Review aufgestöbert hatte (lese ich im Moment sehr häufig) -- also habe ich brav einen Kommentar auf mashable.com eingestellt, mit einem kurzen entsprechenden Hinweis.

If you missed the piece on Baidu, check it out on CWR. Baidu was pretty much a Google-clone up until now (albeit their infamous MP3-search), but in one week they will launch Baidu Spaces at hi.baidu.com; a blogging and photosharing-platform much like MSN Spaces. Baidu Spaces will include some features like user-generated CSS-stylesheets, which are uncommon to the chinese blogosphere--nontheless Baidu will face quite some competition on that field.
Pretty much at the same time, Google withdrew Baidu-stocks they held (as far as I remember). Does anybody know more about that?

BTW: CRW writes about a new round of government measures in Mainland China to "regulate" blogs and search-engines. As the Director of the Information Office and the Minister of Information Industry stated on June 28th, the government will try to block more "illegal and harmful information".

Falls euch das mit Baidu entgangen ist, lest mal bei CRW vorbei. Bislang war Baidu ein ziemlicher Google-Klon (bis auf die berühmt-berüchtigte MP3-Suche). Allerdings startet Baidu in einer Woche Baidu-Spaces unter hi.baidu.com, eine Blogging- und Photosharing-Plattform ähnlich den MSN-Spaces. Baidu Spaces wird einige Features enthalten, die so im Moment in China nur wenig verbreitet sind, z.B. werden User ihre Seiten selber per CSS stylen können -- trotzdem werden sie im Bereich Blogging wahrscheinlich auf harte Konkurrenz stoßen.
Übrigens hat Google im selben Zeitraum seine Baidu-Aktion verkauft, soweit ich mich erinnere. Weiss jemand mehr darüber?

Noch was Aktuelles: auf CRW kann man nachlesen, dass die "Regulierung" von Blogs und Suchmaschinen in China ausgeweitet werden soll -- um die zunehmenden schädlichen und kriminellen Angebote zu bekämpfen, so der Direktor des Informationsbüros und der Minister für die Informationsindustrie.

Techrunch hat vorgestern Zlango vorgestellt, ein israelisches Start-Up-Unternehmen, das eine Iconbasierte Zeichensprache für SMS-Nachrichten entwickelt.

Users of the service download a thin 64K Java or Brew application for their GSM or CDMA phone. The application converts the icons into a SMS message and then re-translates back to icons at the receiver phone."

Sounds funny, but is it really useful beyond joking around with it for a few minutes? Michael Arrington actually sees an opportunity for messaging across language- and cultural borders with Zlango. I'm not so optimistic--to create meaningful icons which can be understood intuitively by a given usergroup is quite tough (the guys at Iconfactory/Stockicons are doing a good job there, IMO). Achieving this cross-cultural seems to be very difficult.

Semiotics states that different cultures tie "signifiers" (the sign itself) to different "signifieds" (the meaning). At least they differ in connotations. Regarding this, Zlango's icons seem to be a bit too "western" to me. What would the icon "turtle" possibly mean? In western culture probably "slowness". In asian culture more like "luck" and "wealth".

Maybe the Zlango-team should take a look at pictographic scripts which happen to function quite stable over a long long time, like chinese...

Hört sich witzig an, aber hat Zlango das Potential für ernsthafte, dauerhafte Anwendung? Michael Arrington sieht darin sogar die Möglichkeit, kultur- und sprachübergreifend miteinander zu sms'en. Ich bin da nicht so optimistisch -- Icons zu gestalten, die für eine Benutzergruppe bedeutungsvoll und intuitiv verständlich sind, ist schwierig (die Leute von Iconfactory/Stockicons machen da meiner Meinung nach einen guten Job); das auch noch im kulturübergreifenden Rahmen hinzubekommen, halte ich wirklich für sehr schwer.

Der Semiotik nach erzeugen "Signifier" (das Zeichen selbst) in verschiedenen Kulturen Assoziationen mit unterschiedlichen "Signifieds" (das, was mit dem Zeichen gemeint ist). Zumindest gibt es einen Unterschied bei den transportierten Konnotationen.
Zlangos Icons scheinen mir dafür zu westlich orientiert: was meint man z.B.mit dem Icon "Schildkröte"? Für Westler könnte das "Langsam" bedeuten. Asiaten assoziieren damit eher "Glück" und "Reichtum".

Vielleicht sollten die Macher von Zlango mal einen Blick auf, seit längerer Zeit stabil funktionierende, piktographische Schriften werfen, wie das Chinesische...

Milton Friedman on Hong Kong

Long time I didn't found something interesting at del.icio.us/popular. Today I followed a link to an article by Milton Friedman, american economist and Nobel Prize winner in economics. It's a bit old but still very interesting: Friedman compares Hong Kong's economy with Britain, Israel and the USA.

"The real lesson of Hong Kong ... is that we're using our resources inefficiently. Our government is spending our money to subsidize tobacco and to penalize smoking; to subsidize childbearing and to discourage childbearing; to build new housing and to tear down housing; to subsidize agriculture and to penalize agriculture; and on and on not to mention converting square miles of forests into billions of paper forms and spending many man-years of labor filling them out and then filing them. In the process, government tends to neglect its basic functions..."

I'd love to see a comparison between Hong Kong and Germany too. Really, Hong Kong is still my favorite place to shift my business to--even though my fellow blogger Edwyn advised me on skipping Hong Kong alltogether and going to mainland directly. The incorporation of our new company in Hong Kong was finalized about last week. At the moment I'm building up a company-blog on Wordpress for this one.

Milton Friedman über Hong Kong
Ich bin seit längerer Zeit auf keine interessanten Links mehr bei del.icio.us/popular gestoßen. Heute fand ich einen Verweis auf einen Artikel von Milton Friedman, dem amerikanischen Ökonomen und Nobelpreisträger für Ökonomie. Ist schon ein paar Jährchen alt, aber immer noch aktuell und interessant: Friedman vergleicht die Wirtschaft von Hong Kong, England, Israel und den USA miteinander.

Mich hätte ja mal der Vergleich zwischen Hong Kong und Deutschland interessiert. Mein Geschäftsfeld der Wahl ist jedenfalls eher Hong Kong als Deutschland -- auch wenn mein Onlinebekannter Edwyn mir geraten hat, Hong Kong auszulassen und mit den Geschäften direkt nach Festland-China zu gehen. Die Firmengründung unserer Limited in Hong Kong wurde übrigens in den letzten Wochen abgeschlossen. Im Moment bastele ich an einem Company-Blog dafür, aufgesetzt auf Wordpress.

Fellow Blogger Edwyn points to an issue at Taobao.com (biggest chinese competitor of eBay): Taobao tried to launch Zhaocaijinbao, an advertisement-program which would place premium listings on top of all other auction-search-results. Due to user-protests, they are now seemingly backing off, cancelling the whole idea.

Keine Werbung bei Taobao?
Mein Bekannter Edwyn blogt über ein Problem bei Taobao.com (der größte chinesische Konkurrent von eBay): Taobao versuchte, einen neuen Service namens Zhaocaijinbao zu launchen, ein Werbemodell, bei dem Premiumlistings den normalen Auktions-Suchresultaten vorangestellt werden. Nach User-Protesten wird nun gemunkelt, daß Zhaocaijinbao gestoppt werden soll.

Jack Ma, founder of Alibaba and Taobao, apologized at a Taobao-forum and tried to address the whole situation by asking users to embrace the change for more fruitful business. The final decision for Zhaocaijinbao is due to next week. In the meantime eBay China and Paipai are seemingly trying take advantage of the whole situation by winning over pissed-off Taobao-Shopowners.

The amount of outrage is truely amazing to me. I read about a similar revenue-model, LinkedIn wanted to implement (at least one of their founders ever mentioned something similar at an interview). I always saw it as a quite viable business-model. Maybe acceptance at LinkedIn would be higher, cause they already display ads on their results-pages.
Nontheless I agree with Edwyn: by keeping a paid model for Taobao-Auctions instead of a free ad-based program, Taobao could effectively fight fraud at their service. In the end they will have to make a decision between quality and quantity.

In der Zwischenzeit versuchen offensichtlich eBay China und Paipai, die Lage für sich zu nutzen, und verärgerte Taobao-Shopbetreiber abzuwerben.

Das Ausmaß der Verärgerung ist für mich ein wenig befremdlich. Ich habe mal darüber gelesen, daß LinkedIn ein ähnliches Geschäftsmodell einführen wollten (zumindest hatte einer der LinkedIn-Gründer in einem Interview über eine sehr ähnliche Idee berichtet). Ich empfand das Geschäftsmodell immer als durchaus vernünftig. Vielleicht wäre ja die Akzeptanz bei LinkedIn höher, weil dort bereits auf Resultat-Seiten Google-Werbung plaziert wird?
Trotzdem stimme ich mit Edwyn überein: mit einem Modell kostenpflichtiger Auktionen könnte Taobao dem Problem betrügerischer Auktionen sehr viel besser begegnen. Am Ende muss eine Entscheidung zu Gunsten von Qualität oder Quantität getroffen werden.

People like Oliver Wagner at agenturblog already predicted the GUI would come out ultimately ugly. Unfortunately they were so true IMO. The "Ribbon"--the most obvious new visual feature of Office 2007--replaces the typical old toolbars, using some kind of tabbed organization. From a demo of Msoft User Experience Lab I learned about the accumulated office-interface-problems, the ribbon is supposed to combat. While I have to agree that a lot of thought went into structuring the user experience, the overall design leaves me somewhat unimpressed. I did a quick comparison between alpha and beta stage, take a look:

Alpha stage looked a bit more like a rip-off of Apple's brushed metal-GUIs, mixed with a tainted blue. The new GUI looks much more glossy, candy-colored. A design-trend that is already getting so outdated. Too many round and rectangular shapes are interfering with each other--especially the visual form of the top-left corner is annoying to me. By the way: this is the button you are supposed to click to get to the "File"-dropdown-menu; quite out of the users' expectation as I'd say. Nontheless, the splash-screens do not sport curved shapes, but those edged corners, people used some 2 or 3 years ago to look sci-fi and trendy, yawn...

Upshot: the outlook of Office 2007 is by far not such a big step like the new user experience flow--nontheless will it have some wide impact on the field of GUI-design.

Oliver Wagner in seinem Agenturblog war einer derjenigen, der ein häßliches GUI-Design beim neuen Office bereits vor einigen Monaten attestierte. Leider hat sich diese Ansicht wohl bewahrheitet.
Die visuell auffälligste neue Komponente ist das "Ribbon", eine Art von Tab-Struktur, welche die alten Werkzeugleisten ersetzt. In einem Demo des Msoft User Experience Lab gab es einen ganzen Strauß von Office-Benutzer-Problemen zu sehen, die das Ribbon lösen soll. In die Restrukturierung des Ablaufs der normalen Office-Aufgaben ist wirklich eine Menge Überlegung gesteckt worden. Dafür wirkt die Gestaltung der Nutzeroberfläche dann aber wiederum lieblos und wenig zukunftsweisend. Ich habe mal einen schnellen Vergleich zwischen der Alpha- und der Betaversion gemacht.

Die Alphaversion wirkte ein wenig wie von Apples Metallic-Oberflächen abgekupfert, gemixt mit einem getrübten Blau. Das neue GUI kommt sehr viel mehr glossy und bonbonfarben daher. Das Design folgt einem Trend, der schon längst keiner mehr ist. Zu viele eckige und runde Formen kämpfen da gegeneinander an -- besonders die obere linke Ecke finde ich sehr unharmonisch. Übrigens: das ist der Button, hinter dem sich das "Datei"-Menü verbirgt; nicht gerade erwartungskonform.
Dafür finden sich in den Splashscreens der neuen Office-Anwendungen wiederum keine dieser Kurven und Ellipsen, sondern angeschrägten Ecken, die vor 2-3 Jahren eingesetzt wurden um Sci-Fi und Trendy auszusehen, gähn...

Fazit: das Redesign ist kein ähnlich großer Wurf wie die Restrukturierung des Useflow -- trotzdem wird es wohl einen großen Einfluss auf das Feld GUI-Design haben.

Der neueste Fall eines solchen Patentes, das auch meine eigene Arbeit beeinträchtigt, wurde auf das Einbinden von Multimedia-Objekten (wie z.B. Flash) in Websites angemeldet.

The story started out already in February. Wikipedia has the long version:

"Eolas is a United States company and patent licensee. It was founded in 1994 by Dr. Michael David Doyle. His UCSF team has claimed to have created the first web browser that supported plugins. They demonstrated it at Xerox PARC, in November 1993, at the second Bay Area SIGWEB meeting. The claim has been contested by Perry Pei-Yuan Wei, developer of the earlier Viola browser, a claim supported by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and other Web developers.
Patent 5,838,906, titled "Distributed hypermedia method for automatically invoking external application providing interaction and display of embedded objects within a hypermedia document," was filed on October 17, 1994 and granted on November 17, 1998.
In 1999 Eolas filed suit in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois against Microsoft over validity and use of the patent. Eolas won the initial case in August 2003 and was awarded damages of $521m from Microsoft for infringement. The District Court reaffirmed its decision in January 2004."

Due to this patent, plug-ins embedded via embed, applet and object will not be interactive unless the user clicked unto them first (and received an irritating message). At the moment only IE is being affected.
If you don't mind using Javascript, then you can use a workaround (find details here and here) to embed your plug-ins via script, thus avoiding the patent ruling.

I initially read about a similar method to embed flash-objects through Javascript at Macromedia's devnet articles before. At that time I disapproved on that method, cause the only argument for it seemingly was that it looked more "clean" than the original embed-code. But now I'm going to use this kind of embedding too... :P

Durch dieses Patent werden Plugins, die mit embed, applet oder object eingebunden wurden, nun erst dann interaktiv, nachdem sie einmal angeklickt wurden (und dem User eine nervige Meldung beschert haben). Z.Zt ist allerdings nur der IE betroffen. Wer sich nicht daran stört, Javascript zu verwenden, kann dieses benutzen, um solche Plugins zu integrieren (mehr über die Methode hier und hier). Dadurch wird die Patentbestimmung umgangen.

Ich habe bereits vorher in einem Macromedia-Entwickler-Artikel über eine ähnliche Methode gelesen. Zu dem Zeitpunkt habe ich sie allerdings verworfen, denn als Argument dafür konnte der Entwickler nur anführen, daß der Code übersichtlicher aussieht. Nun werde ich diese Technik wohl auf einsetzen (müssen)...

Collective X--Service 404

My colleague Stefan pointed me to this one: when trying to start a new "lite"-account at Collective X, you got to agree with the Terms of Service at the end of the registration process. But if you want to read them before agreeing, you receive a 404. I tried it myself and found the same error. Seems like it happens no matter which browser you are using.
After some people trying out collective X already, I wonder why nobody else stumbled upon this yet. Early adopters to eager to read legal stuff?

Collective X -- Service 404
Mein Kollege Stefan hat mich auf folgendes hingewiesen: möchte man bei Collective X einen Lite-Account einrichten, muss man am Ende der Registrierung den Geschäftsbedingungen zustimmen. Will man diese aber lesen, erhält man einen 404. Ich habe das selber mal ausprobiert und bin auf den selben Fehler gestoßen. Scheint also unabhängig vom Browser zu sein.
Nachdem bereits einige Nutzer Collective X ausprobiert haben, wundert es mich ein bischen, daß scheinbar noch niemand sonst auf diesen Fehler gestoßen ist. Haben Early Adopters nicht genug Zeit, sich solche Gechäftsbedingungen durchzulesen?

Edwyn Chan pointed me to Umair Haque's post on LinkedIn. Umair's issue: LinkedIn sucks, cause it narrows interaction to the lowest possible denominator. Edwyn's criticism: you need to add new values to such network too aften to keep people coming back.
Now, I wouldn't fully agree on that one--to me, really solving a problem for the individual will definitely make them come back in the first place. Later on the community will eventually be the biggest drive to come back. This is the reason why I fully agree with Umair: you need to really get members in touch with each other, instead of getting in the way of communication. You need to let people create something together.
This is an issue I ever discussed with Amy Gu in Hong Kong: blogging seems to be a better tool to gather new contacts, as it lets you follow the ideas of an individual and discuss about them freely. Amy wrote about this lately when one of her friends started We@link (to me quite a chinese LinkedIn-clone).

Then Collaborative X went public last week. After a lot of anticipation over the past months, a lot of bloggers came to believe that this would be something like LinkedIn, but with some more powerful collaborative tools. Maybe this is the reason why people like Michael Arrington commented that Collaborative X is like LinkedIn should have been in the first place. Actually, I wouldn't compare Collaborative X so much to LinkedIn--I'd rather see this as a competitor to services like Basecamp or Weboffice. Edwyn verlinkte auf ein Posting von Umair Haque, in dem Umair seine Kritik über LinkedIn äußert: LinkedIn ist seiner Meinung nach Mist, weil dort Interaktion auf ein zu geringes Maß heruntergeschraubt wird. Edwyns Kritik: solche Services müssen zu häufig neue Features hinzufügen, damit Nutzer regelmäßig "dabeibleiben".
Ich stimme dem nicht so ganz zu: ein Service, der wirklich ein Problem löst, wird von Nutzern anfänglich auch regelmäßig benutzt werden. Später wird dann die dortige Community der wichtigste Faktor sein, zurückzukommen. Deshalb stimme ich Umair zu: eine Netzwerk-Site muss dabei helfen, die Mitglieder miteinander zu vernetzen, statt Kommunikation zu blocken. Mitglieder müssen etwas gemeinsam kreieren können.
Dieses Thema haben Amy Gu und ich in Hong Kong diskutiert: Blogging scheint ein sehr viel nützlicheres Netzwerk-Tool zu sein, da man hier den Gedanken eines Kontaktes folgen und frei über Ideen diskutieren kann. Amy schrieb etwas zum Thema anlässlich dem Start von We@link (eine Netzwerk-Seite eines ihrer Kontakte, für mich allerdings offensichtlich ein ziemlicher LinkedIn-Klon).

Und Collaborative X ging letzte Woche live. Eine Menge Mutmaßungen im Vorfeld gingen dahin, daß Collaborative X eine Art LinkedIn mit verbesserten kollaborativen Werkzeugen ist. Vielleicht ist das ja auch der Grund, warum Michael Arrington neulich kommentierte, daß LinkedIn von vornherein hätte wie Collaborative X sein sollen. Three Weddings and a departure

This is going to be my last posting from Hong Kong--well, at least for this time. I'm taking my plane on Saturday night to travel back to Duesseldorf. I really enjoyed the great time here, getting to know interesting people and meeting some fellow bloggers.
Last Monday I was surprisingly taken to be witness to the wedding of my friend Sascha at the registry in Central. My second event like this, after being invited to the wedding of Virgin and Dominic. And I will be back in Germany just in time to attend to the wedding of my friends Kaid and Alexandra...

Drei Hochzeiten und eine Abreise
Dies ist mein letzter Blogeintrag hier in Hong Kong -- zumindest fürs erste. Mein Flieger nach Düsseldorf geht Samstag Nacht. Ich hatte wirklich eine tolle Zeit hier, habe interessante Leute kennengelernt und ein paar Onlinebekannte persönlich getroffen.
Letzten Montag habe ich überraschend den Trauzeugen bei der Hochzeit meines Freundes Sascha im Standesamt in Central gegeben. Bereits die zweite Trauung hier, nachdem ich zur Hochzeit von Virgin und Dominic eingeladen worden bin. Ebay als Exitstrategie?
Kürzlich bin ich über Techcrunch auf eine Ebay-Auktion gestoßen, in der eine Ajax-unterstützte Metasuchmaschine zur Versteigerung ansteht. Das letzte Mal, als ich reingeschaut habe, stand der Preis bei rund 11.000 Dollar...

Some comments at Techcrunch found it faulty that no code-snippets of the source were being shown at that auction, thus forcing bidders to buy a pig in a poke. My first thought was: why would somebody stress themself with all the programming, and then sell everything at a likely and comparably low price? Is this supposed to be an exitstrategy for a webservice?
After poking around a little bit more, I found the same offerer had done another auction some 4 or 5 months ago, selling another service for around 13000 bucks then--which made me see everything from a different perspective suddenly. Ondemandsystems, the site belonging to that service is down, BTW...

PS: since when is it allowed to deal with purely virtual goods on Ebay?

Diverse Kommentare bemängeln, daß da die Katze im Sack angeboten wird, da keine Auszüge aus dem Quellcode zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Mein erster Gedanke war: warum macht sich jemand zuerst die Mühe der ganzen Programmierung und schlägt das ganze dann für einen voraussichtlich sehr geringen Preis los? Ist das eine sinnvolle Exitstrategie für einen Webservice?
Nach ein wenig Herumstöbern fand ich dann wiederum eine weitere Versteigerung, bei der derselbe Anbieter knapp 4-5 Monate zuvor bereits einen anderen Service bei Ebay für rund 13.000 Dollar versteigert hat. Das rückt das ganze für mich in ein etwas anderes Licht. Die zu diesem Service gehörende Site OnDemandSystems ist übrigens nicht erreichbar.

"Unmarketing?" Sigh, is it already a form of non-marketing, when the propaganga-medium for a product or service is changed from a brochure or microsite to a blogger? What do you think?

Week 8

This is my second month in Hong Kong (already, and doesn't quite feel like this long). Yesterday we rushed Stefan to the airport to catch his flight--we really had some fun-time over here. As for myself, I'm staying till next-next weekend before I finally get back to good old Germany.
Tomorrow I'm meeting up with Edwyn Chan, a fellow blogger coming from Hong Kong, and doing internet-business in Beijing.

Die achte Woche
Dies ist bereits mein zweiter Monat in Hong Kong (für mich fühlt es sich eher wie zwei Wochen an). Gestern sind Stefan und ich zum Flughafen gehetzt, damit er seinen Flieger noch rechtzeitig kriegt -- wir hatten hier wirklich eine lustige Zeit. Ich selber fliege dann in knapp zwei Wochen zurück nach Deutschland.
Morgen treffe ich mich mit Edwyn Chan, ein Online-Bekannter aus Hong Kong, der im Bereich Internet in Peking arbeitet.
